Canadian Party
Drops Candidate
Who Attacked Jews

TORONTO, (JTA)—The So-
cial Credit Party, Canada's third
largest political group, said it
would not renew the member-
ship of Neil Carmichael who, as
P, Social Credit candidate for
the House of Commons, attract-
ed international attention last
Spring by charging that the
Rothschild family was trying to
get control of all Canadian
mines through concealed agents.
Last March, the party re-
buked Carmichael for his
charges but said he would be
permitted to continue his cam-
paign. At that time, party offi-
cials said Carmichael would not
be encouraged to seek election
again.
At the same time, Social
Credit party officials denounced
a splinter group bearing the
name "Social Credit Action
Group" as anti-Semitic but said
there was nothing they could
do to prevent the group from
using that name.

Rabbi Gavrilov was the only one
identified by the paper as being
Jewish. There was no indication
whether he headed a congrega-
tion. He was said to have moved
from Samarkand, in Central
Asia, to Piatigorsk, where, the
paper charged, he set up a "real
money-changing office" in his
home. The newspaper said the
sentences were handed down
after a four-week trial at Piati-
gorsk.
British Chief Rabbi Israel
Brodie appealed to the Soviet
government to "revise" the
death sentence handed down
against Rabbi Gavrilov. In a
telegram to the Soviet authori-
ties, Rabbi Brodie declared:
"In the name of British Jewry,
I earnestly appeal on humani-
tarian grounds for the Soviet
government to revise the death
sentence on Rabbi Gavrilov
of Piatigorsk as reported in
the press."

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (JTA)
—The National Student Assecia-

tion, at its 16th annual conven-
tion here, adopted a resolution
condemning attempts by the
Soviet Union to suppress and
harass Jewish education, cul-
ture, and religious expression.
The NSA represents American
students of all faiths from all
over the country.
The convention adopted an-
other resolution which, in effect,
supported the "right" of George
Lincoln Rockwell, American Nazi
leader, to speak at colleges and
universities. It was indicated
that the NSA favored freedom
of expression for all ideas, even
anti-Semitism and Nazism.
