NEW YORK, (JTA) — Isaac
Don Levine, journalist and ex-
pert on Soviet affairs, con-
. firmed to the
Jewish Tele-
graphic Agen-
cy that he had
been reliably
informed in
Moscow last
June that La-
zar Kagano-
vich, who had
been a mem-
ber of the
Soviet Polit-
buro and lead-
ing economic
planner till he
was down-
graded by
Kaganovich
Premier
Khrushchev, died of a heart at-
tack last December.
Kaganovich, a Jew, had at-
tained the highest rungs of the
Soviet hierarchy under Joseph
Stalin.
Levine said he had been in-
formed of the death of Kagano-
vich during a visit to Moscow.
He also said that he had visited
the Novo Devichye cemetery,
where many former Soviet
greats lie buried and was given
detailed instructions by the
caretaker on how to find the
Kaganovich grave. He found a
mound at the designated place,

NEW YORK, (JTA)—Asser-

tions that the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency had accused
Sen. Barry Goldwater of anti-
Semitism were rejected this
weekend by two leading Ameri-
can Jewish newspapers.
The Jewish Chronicle of
Pittsburgh termed the charge,
first made in a syndicated col-
umn in the New York Herald
Tribune, "poppycock." The Jew-
ish Floridian, of Miami termed
the discussion "a sad one."

he said, but no marker or tomb-
stone of any kind. He said he
learned on further inquiry that
it was a practice of Soviet
authorities to wait about a year
for the ground to settle after
a burial before placing a
marker.
Levine said he had not sought
to contact members of the Ka-
ganovich family to seek to ver-
ify the death report because he
had come to Russia as a tourist
to do some research in Soviet
archives, and did not want to
compromise his status.

UNITED NATIONS, N. Y.,
(JTA)—Egypt filed a complaint
with the United Nations Secur-
ity Council charging Israel with
violation of Egyptian air space
on July 23.
The complaint, in a letter to
the Security Council president,
cited a resolution adopted by
the Egyptian-Israel Mixed Arm-
istice Commission on Aug. 5
condemning Israel for "such
hostile action." Israel did not
attend the Aug. 5 meeting, held
in Gaza, having refused since
the 1956 Sinai campaign to do
so on grounds that Egyptian
aggressions have made the arm-
istice pact null and void.

Canadian Jewish Congress
conveyed to the ambassador of
Austria to Ottawa, Dr. Eugen
Buresch, the concern of the Jew-
ish communities over the release
from custody of Franz Murer,
who is generally known to have
been the Gestapo chief in Vilna
and author of heinous crimes.
Michael Garber, Q.C., presi-
dent of congress, emphasized
that "surely the victims of
Nazism who were fortunate
enough to have escaped have a
right to demand the trial and
punishment of the guilty and
surely decency requires that the
memories of the immediate vic-
tims be not sullied by the
escape of people such as Murer."
The Austrian ambassador re-
plied that he has forwarded the
protest to the competent au-
thorities in Austria. He pointed
out that the public prosecution
has lodged an appeal against the
acquittal arrived at by the jury
in Graz, an appeal being ad-
missible against an acquitting
verdict according to Austrian
criminal procedure. Cons e-
quently the case is at present
before the Federal Supreme
Court in Vienna which will
