LONDON, (JTA) — Phyllis Bottome, the non-Jewish novelist and lecturer who was one of the first to recognize the evils of the Nazi regime in pre-World War II Germany, and attempted to warn England and America of it, died here last weekend. She was 79. Miss Bottome's best known work was "The Mortal Storm," an anti-Nazi novel pub- lished in 1938 that became a best seller. She was greatly influenced by the Austrian-Jewish psycholo- gist, Alfred Adler, whom she met during a period of residence in Vienna. In 1938, she worked in Austria to aid refugees fleeing Hitler. Later, she continued her anti-H itler activities in the United States. Justice Halpern Dies; Served at UN BUFFALO, N.Y. (JTA) — Justice Philip Halpern, well- known Jewish communal leader and for six years United States member of the United Nations Subcommission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protec- tion of Minorities, died here Sunday. He was 62. Halpern, who served in the New York State Supreme Court's Appellate Division, was on the UN Subcommission dur- ing the height of the swastika- smearing epidemic of 1960. In January of that year, he was the principal sponsor of the first UN resolution condemning anti- Semitism ever to be adopted by the world organization. He served on the Subcommis- sion, a subsidiary of the United Nations Human Rights Commis- sion, from 1954 to 1962. He also attended the Commission itself as principal advisor to the United States Delegation, from 1953 to 1955. He was awarded the National Brotherhood Cita- tion of the National Conference of Christians and Jews in 1954 in recognition of his work at the United Nations. He was also chairman of the Buffalo chap- ter of the American Jewish Committee, and a member of the Committee's board of dele- gates, its overall national goV- erning body. Presidents Mourn Death of Johnston, Mid-East Mediator WASHINGTON, (JTA)—Presi- dent Kennedy and former Presi- dents Eisenhower and Truman expressed their deepest condol- ences over the death of Eric A. Johnston, author of a proposal for comprehensive, Arab-Israeli development of the Jordan River valley. Johnston was 66. Keenly interested in foreign affairs, although his business career was with the Motion Pic- ture Association of America, of which he was president, John- ston was sent by President Eisenhower to the Middle East, in 1955, as a personal represen- tative, to help resolve Middle East tensions over the use of the Jordan River waters. He drew a plan, known by his name, which would have established in the Jordan River valley a proj- ect similar to America's TVA. Israel accepted the plan. The Arab state first approved the plan, then reneged. In their con- dolences, Mr. Kennedy and both Gen. Eisenhower and ex-Presi- dent Triunan expressed their warmest praise of Johnston. Hebrew-Yiddish Author Gelbfarb `Giladi' Dies NEW YORK, (JTA)—Joshua Gelbfarb Giladi, a well known Hebrew-Yiddish author, editor and educator, died last weekend. He was 59. Gelbfarb, who used "Giladi" as his pen name, was born in Poland where he became a jour- nalist and writer on education. He subsequently emigrated to Canada where he taught and wrote for the "Canadian Eagle" in Montreal. He also edited the monthly "Kinderland" in HaN, a- na, Cuba. In New York, Gelbfarb served on the Ramaz Yeshiva faculty. Moscow Announces Deaths of Noted Writer, Actress LONDON, (JTA)—The deaths of Shalom Gordon, Soviet writ- er and literary critic, and So- phia Leschtschinskaya, well- known Jewish actress, have been announced in Moscow, it was reported here. Gordon, who was in his 60's, wrote extensive- ly about Yiddish literature. The actress died in Saratov during a visit to that town with a Moscow troupe. Rabbi Bosniak, Author of Prayer Books, Dies NEW YORK (JTA) — Rabbi Jacob Bosniak, author of several Jewish prayer books, including the two-volume "Prayers of Is- rael" published in 1925 and 1937, "An Anthology of Prayer, published in 1958, died here Aug. 25. He was 75. He was rabbi emeritus of the Ocean Parkway Jewish Center in Brooklyn, and an active Zionist. Want ads get quick results!
