BONN, (JTA)—The Associa-
tion for Christian Jewish Co-
operation circulated widely a
memorandum expressing grave
concern over the "mildness" of
sentences imposed on Nazi war
criminals by West German
courts.
Dr. Theodor Heuss, former
president of West Germany, is
patron of the association.
The memorandum asserted
that the cases of wartime mass
murders and crimes of vio-
lence committed by the Nazis
were being handled differently
from ordinary murder cases.
The memorandum warned that
a threat was - developing that
"general concepts of justice
will be increasingly influenced
by the notion that crimes com-
mitted on orders of the state
are not real crimes, and that
murder by decree or with offi-
cial approval is less than ordi-
nary murder."
The memorandum was circu-
lated among 60 law professors
of West German universities
and was sent to members of

Bnai Israel Families
End Month Sit-In
Demonstration in Israel

JERUSALEM ( JTA) —T we n ty
families of Bnai Israel Jews
from India ended a month-long
demonstration outside the of-
fices of the „Jewish Agency
over a ariety of grievances - ,
when they were promised a
meeting with Premier Levi Esh-
kol.
The principal complaint in-
volved a long-running dispute
with the Israeli rabbinate,
which had questioned the valid-
ity of the Jewishness of the
Bnai Israelites. The dispute
had led to charges of refusal
by Israeli marriage registrars
to wed Bnai Israel Jews with.
Jews of other communities in
Israel. After widespread pro-
tests, the Israel Rabbinate set
up regulations for such mar-
riages requiring investigation
of the Jewish backgrounds of
Bnai Israel marriage applicants.
The 20 families set up tents
outside the Jewish Agency of-
fiees and conducted a demon-
stration by squatting in the
tents. During the month, their
cause was widely discussed in
the local press and recently
received formal support from
the League Against Religious
Coercion, which was organized
to fight the exclusive control
over matters of personal status
maintained over Israeli Jews by
the Israeli rabbinate.
Announcing the end of the
demonstration, the families said
that the Jewish Agency had
promised to reinstate them in
jobs and that individual atten-
tion would be given to the spe-
cial integration problems of
each family.

parliament, state officials, and
.trade union leaders.
The memorandum asserted
that the judgments in a num-
ber of cases "have had repercus-
sions on public opinion, and
justify the attention drawn to
certain erroneous developments
in criminal jurisprudence" in
West German courts. The state-
ment declared that, in view of
the large number of Nazi war
crime cases still pending, it
was necessary to draw attention
as soon as possible to the "dan-
gers" to which such jurispru-
dence could lead.
HANNOVER, (JTA) — .Dr.
Otto Bradfisch and Guenter
Fuchs, Nazi war criminals al-
legedly responsible for the mur-
der of 85,000 Jews in Poland
during World War II, will go
on trial here Sept. 2.
Bradfisch, now serving a 10-
year prison term for the mur-
der of 15,000 Jews elsewhere
in Nazi-occupied Europe, was
an S.S. major. Fuchs, a former
commissioner in the Nazi crim-
inal police, has been in custody
since 1960, pending trial. More
than 100 witnesses from the
United States and Israel are ex-
pected to testify.

Freehof's Reform Responsa

Vice-chancellor Bruno Pitter-
man of Austria informed the
Jewish Labor Committee that
the Austrian Socialist Party
will make every possible at-
tempt to obtain the reversal of
a court decision that freed
Franz Murer, the alleged Nazi
mass-murderer of the Vilna
ghetto during the Second World
War.
The message was sent in a
cable to Adolph Held, chairman
of the Jewish Labor Committee,
following a telephone confer-
ence by Pitterinan with Benja-
min Tabachinsky, executive sec-
retary of the Jewish labor or-
ganization.
The Austrian Vice-chancellor,
who is also chairman of the
Socialist Party, stated that the
"Austrian Socialists consider
the freeing of the accused
Franz Murer by the jury in
Gratz (Austria) as an erroneous
decision." He said that the Min-
ister of Justice Joseph Broda
will appeal to the Austrian Su-
preme Court for a reversal of
the decision and the Socialists
would give full support to the
Minister's efforts.
Murer had been Germany's
gauleiter in Vilna during the
Second World War and was ac-
cused of having wiped out the
Jewish residents of that city.
He was tried on those charges
several months ago in the city
of Gratz, Austria and was ac-
quitted by a jury made up of
local citizens.
