How well have relations fared between the three major faiths in this country, and what are the prospects for improved and continuing good relations? What effect has the recent Supreme Court decision on the reciting of prayers in public schools had on such relations? "The Outbursts That Await Us", containing three essays on religion and culture in Amer- ica, by Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg of Englewood, N. J.; the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Joseph Moody of the faculty of Ladycliff College, New York, and Martin E. Marty, an associate editor of Christian Century, published by Macmil- lan, serves as an excellent guide to students of the religious- cultural problems. The Protestant viewpoint outlined by Mr. Marty shows how issues become macro• scopic, how a broadening of the base in the spread of publicity on the issue gives "more apparent noise and ugliness" to the religious con- flict. He maintains that plu- ralism is "insubstantial, de- void of content." "If pluralism does not be- come the base for an ideology, American religions will be in their best positions," Mr. Marty contends. "The positive regard with which the American exper- ience is held can be drawn upon. Ideologies and fanati- cisms can be resisted, for the sake of maneuverability and political opportunity." Presenting the Catholic view- point, Msgr. Moody is hopeful. He declares that "on the most divisive issue among us—that of public aid to independent education—a calm study of the procedures in other democratic countries should calm fears and renew intelligent discussion." He states: "More than peaceful co- existence is necessary if Celebrate .. . It would be possible to extract from the religious tradition, common to us all, those ideals which have uni- versal appeal. Lenin remarked that 'without revolutionary theory, there can be no revo- lutionary action.' Certainly it has become apparent that democratic action is ineffect- tive without the stiffening of principle. All religious groups in America affirm the prin- ciples that are needed to un- derpin our democratic struc- ture: the priinacy of man in creation which derives from his God-bestowed intelligence and freedom; the primacy of the moral and the spiritual in human concerns; the dig- nity and worth of every hu- man being; the collateral principle of his responsibility to, and his need to recognize, an objective moral code. This is the rich treasure of the American religious heritage. It belongs to us all. Our na- tion and the world have need of it now. It may appear curi- ous to posterity that at this central point in history the three great religious bodies in America spent their time wrangling about a children's morning prayer. Maimonides, Aquinas, and Calvin would have been puzzled." Pursuing the theme, Rabbi Hertzberg states that "religion is neither established nor com- pletely disestablished in Amer- ica. There is separation of church and state but it is not absolute." . As a Jew, Rabbi Hertzberg writes, feeling at home in the American atmosphere, "my whole tradition points toward the equality of all faiths, even in theory, and to their being able to join together in practice for moral ends." He asserts, in reference to the controversies that have arisen, that: "The Founding Fathers once gave us Seeks to Weigh the Milky Way "Weighing the Milky Way," the luminous expanse of distant stars which stretch across the heavens, is becoming a reality through the research efforts of Dr. Leon Landovitz, an associ- ate professor of physics at Yeshiv a University's Belfer Graduate School of Science. Dr. Landovitz, a 31-year-old physicist, is currently expand- ing his research theory which was developed three years ago by utilizing the information carried by radio waves which is fed into electronic compu- tors. This far-reaching project of Dr. Landovitz, which he started when he was associated with the Brookhaven National Laboratories, will aid in mas- tering celestial space. Dr. Landovitz' idea involves the use of radio waves. After eliminating the masking effects created by other radio waves in the gravitational field, he feeds these signals from the galaxy to electronic computors. Dr. Liandovitz says that weighing the Milky Way would enable astronomers to determine how the stars are distributed in the galaxy and that his method. would also pinpoint the center of the galaxy and reveal the velocity with which the solar system traverses the surround- ing stars of the Milky Way. a clue in the First Amendment as to how to live with such complications in an undogmatic way. Encounters among the major faiths are reviewed in this book dispassionately.
