The Term `Kehillah'
The expression Kehillah
comes from a Biblical root
meaning "to assemble." It is
the popular name given to the
Jewish communities of Lithu-
ania, Poland and Russia which
enjoyed some form of autono-
mous local government. Some
form of this type of community
was also known in Western
Europe in Medieval times.
With autonomy practically dis-
appearing in modern times, the
term "Kehillah" remained as a
general term for the Jewish
community - no matter what
form this social structure would
take.
