Catholic Editor Asks Ecumenical Congregational Dinner for Israel Miami Congregation Offers Tuition-Free Council to Condemn Anti-Semitism Bonds to Hear Ben Ari, Wednesday Schooling to All CAMDEN, N.J. (JTA) — The Roman Catholic Ecumenical Council has been called upon by a prominent Catholic here to condemn anti-Semitism at its session scheduled to reconvene in Rome next month. The call was issued by the Rev. Msgr. Salvatore J. Adamo, executive editor of the Catholic Star Herald, official organ of the Caniden Diocese, which em- braces all of southern New Jersey. Writing in the church organ, Msgr. Adamo declared: "There is an unfortunate ele- ment in our Catholic upbringing that conveys the idea that the Jews killed God." This, he said, leads Roman Catholics to "con- sider hatred toward the Jews not something sinful but rather a service to God. A clear pro- nouncement by the Vatican Council could help end this re- ligious delusion once an_d for all." The editor, one of the leading figures in his diocese, also dis- puted the argument that Arab members of the Church would take such a declaration to mean siding with the State of Israel against the Arab countries. "When people say or write that they are not against the Jews, only against Israel and Zionism, don't be taken in," he wrote. "It's nothing but a decoy. He suggested that condemnation of anti-Semitism by the Ecumenical Council would advance the cause of peace and prosperity in the Middle East. * * • LONDON (JTA) — A leading Catholic writer on world affairs urged a positive Christian ap- proach which would attack the causes of anti-Semitism by stres- sing "a sense of common human- ity." Writing in the Sunday Ob- server, Mrs. Barbara Ward Jack- son asserted that the resumption of the Ecumenical Council in Rome next month could offer Catholic Christianity the "oppor- tunity to restate with utmost emphasis and solemnity its re- jection of anti-Semitism and its condemnation of every myth" which makes "the Jews a species of cosmic villains in the divine drama" She said that such a solemn declaration would be only a starting point because "the first need is for Christians and Jews to be ready, in a new and concrete way, to conduct the search together to hunt down the old fatal myths where they have really sunk their roots." Lahser JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The Israel cabinet decided that the hotly disputed issue of a sec- ond kitchen on the luxury liner SS Shalom for the preparation of non-kosher food was an issue of economics and not of re- ligion, and left the decision to the liner's owners, the Zim- Shoham Line. The decision was voted re- portedly by a close margin, in disregard of a Ministerial Com- mittee recommendation that the issue was one of principle, and that an Israeli carrier should not have non-kosher facilities. The Zim directorate had come out strongly, during protracted public debate, in favor of a non- kosher kitchen for "competitive reasons." The Israel rabbinate will not certify the arrangements for kosher food on the S. S. Shalom if a non-kosher kitchen is in- stalled on the liner. Social Welfare Minister Joseph Burg called it a "deep wound" which would cause serious re- percussions in coalition rela- tions. Zim-Shoham has indicated it wants a . non-kosher kitchen, as well as a kosher one, to meet competition in trans-Atlantic travel facilities. Simultaneously, a warning was given that no American Orthodox rabbi would grant cer- tification for the kosher kitchen if non-kosher facilities were provided. That warning was made by Rabbi Solomon Reich- man, one of a group of mem- bers of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada now visiting Israel.
