Ratify Payments Monument
Unveiled in Poland
LONDON, (JTA) - A monu-
to Nazi Victims

ROME, (JTA) - West Ger-
many and Italy formally ex-
changed ratification instruments
to an agreement between the
two countries, providing for
payment by the Bonn Govern-
ment to Italy of $10,000,000 for
the indemnification of Jews and
other victims of Nazi deporta-
tions during the Second World
War.
An important provision of the
agreement is a clause enabling
Italian victims of Nazi perse-
cution to apply to the Bonn
Government for compensation.
In the past, such claims had
been rejected by West Germany
on the basis of a provision in
the peace treaty between Italy
and the Allies, according to
which Italy waived any Govern-
mental or private claims for
war damages against Germany.
The new agreement estab-
lished the principle that the
waiver contained in the peace
treaty will not be valid for any
damage arising from racial or
political persecution. Conse-
quently, claims by Italian citi-
zens in accordance with Ger-
man indemnification 1 a w s,
which had been refused by the
Bonn Government on the basis
of the peace treaty waiver, will
now be reexamined by the West
German authorities. • Italian citi-
zens entitled to compensation,
who have not filed such claims,
may do so within the next 12
months.

ment to the late Albert Michael-
son, the American-Jewish physi-
cist, will be unveiled next
month in the Polish town of
Czelno, where he was born in
1852, it was learned here.
Dr. Michaelson, who died in
1931, was a student of Albert
Einstein, and one of the world's
foremost authorities on Ein-
stein's theory of relativity. He
was brought to the United
States by his parents when he
was 5 years old, and eventually
became a professor of physics
at the University of Chicago.
The monument will be dedi-
cated during an international
conference of physicists sched-
uled to take place in Poland in
September.

Ilya Schkolnik, noted violinist
who was the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra's concertmaster from
1919 to 1944, died in Hollywood,

73. One of the nation's best
known violinists, he appeared
in concerts as soloist and was
famed as a teacher.
Born in Russia, he was
brought to Detroit by the late
Ossip Gabrilowitsch who also
interested him in Zionism and
the Jewish National Fund. He
appeared at one of the major
events of the JNF Women's
Auxiliary in the early 1940s.
Mr. Schkolnick received his
musical training from his fath-
er, who was a member of the
Odessa Opera Orchestra. He
was a graduate of the Leipzig
Royal Academy and won the
Concours Prize in Brussels. Be-
fore joining the Detroit Sym-
