Registration in all age groups for the fall semester of the United Hebrew Schools is now under way, with classes in the elementary grades to start after Labor Day. Parents are urged to register their children now in order to be admitted for the new term. The United Hebrew Schools is the community's central agency for Jewish education and conducts classes in 13 different locations in the Detroit metro- politan area. Through the support of the Jewish Welfare Federation and thel Allied Jewish Campaign, every child is eligible to re- ceive a sound modern Jewish education regardless of the par- ent's ability to pay. To meet graduation require- ments and the new five-year Bar Mitzvah regulations of syn- agogues, children who have reached the age of eight should now be enrolled in Hebrew school. Bar Mitzvah preparation is part of the Hebrew School course for which there are no extra fees or charges. Classes for girls are being of- fered in most branches of the schools, an addition to regular classes open to both boys and girls. The girls' classes are con- ducted on a limited basis and are designed to prepare the young women for Jewish living in the home. In response to the many requests for modern Hebrew training on an informal basis designed for young children, special classes have been formed for six and seven year olds, which meet twice weekly. The program consists of Hebrew conversation, He- brew songs and playlets and holiday celebrations. Teach- ers trained to work with this age group conduct the pro- gram. A new branch building of the schoOls, the Maly and Samuel Cohn Branch, opened this year, is located at Osmus and Seven Mile Road in Livonia. Registration also is being con- ducted for the United Hebrew Schools nursery in Oak Park. Parents with children about 3 1/2 years old should contact the Oak Park office, LI 84747. Registration is taking place for the Sholem Aleichem School, an affiliate of the United Hebrew Schools, located at 19350 Greenfield. Parents may enroll children in another affiliate, the Abra- ham Reisen School of Arbeiter Ring, 18340 Seven Mile. The transportation system of the United Hebrew Schools, consisting of 32 buses and two station-wagons, provides trans- portation for children from all Jewish areas in the city and suburbs to the closest Hebrew School branch or affiliated school. National Council of Jewish Women believes in training their daughters at a very young age to donate for worthwhile causes. From age 3 to 93, Coun- cil Women have been donating their "saleable" articles of cloth- ing, furniture, art objects, and other household items, whether large or small to Council's Re- sale Shop, Puritan, corner of Fairfield. Members have been giving their time for many years to help staff and man this huge project, which grew from a small one room operation on Rowena St. to its present three large stores. The articles donated are sold at attractive figures to all. The revenue from their sale is put to work in many areas. One of Council's current projects is "The Orchards," a Jewish ori- ented home for young disturbed children located in Livonia. An- I other project -is "Operation Friendship," a lounge program for recently discharged psychi- atric patients which includes I teaching crafts, outings, and !movies. It is staffed by volun- teers who are under a profes- sional director. Other projects are "Service to Foreign Born," "Scholar- ships," "Social Action Program," and the "Over-Seas" program which includes, "Ship-A-Box," "Fellowship," and Hebrew Uni- versity High School. Once a year N.C.J.W. rewards it's donors on Thanksgiving Eve with an "Angel Ball," held at Cobo Hall.
