The Brooklyn rabbi re- By PAUL ZOUSMER Jennie Grossinger is a re- markable woman, not only be- cause she has built the world- famous Grossinger Country Club at Grossinger, N.Y., but also be- cause she has distinguished herself as one of the country's foremost humanitarians. Mrs. Grossinger recently told how a simple lesson had started ..,,::her on the happy road to helping people. "When I was a little girl," said Jennie, "m y mother took me to a little pushka (charity box) we had on a door in my house. My mother dropped a few coins into the box and told rn e: "Jennie, Mrs. Grossinger always share your pennies with others. A life without sharing is barren and has no meaning." Jennie remem- bered that advice, and, as a result, her life is fruitful and significant. Evidence of her constructive life is to be seen in the many plaques . and awards she has re- , ceived from charity organiza- I bons, governinents, educational institutions, and service groups. A few years ago, Jennie Gros- singer and Dr. Leona Baumgart- ner, then Commissioner of Health in New York City, were given a testimonial luncheon in honor of their aid to the physi- cally handicapped. As a member of a minority, Jennie Grossinger is extremely sympathetic to the plight of all minorities. Wilberforce Univer- sity, a Baptist institute in Ohio, awarded her a doctor of humani- ties degree a few years ago "for winning a place in the hearts of people of all faiths and colors." Recently, Jennie went to Is- rael to see the new Jennie Grossinger Medical Center in Tel Aviv. It serves 30,000 peo- ple, Arabs as well as Jews. George Jessel, who was in Is- rael at the time, was amazed by the reception she received. "You can't tell me there isn't something magic about Jennie that commands attention and respect_ I was with her when she. visited a small town in Is- rael. The Arabs had absolutely no idea who in the world she was, but they were attracted to her. They flocked around her as though she were a visiting queen." War II and occupation of the area by the Nazi armies, it was reported by Rabbi Chaim Tver- sky, spiritual leader of a syna- gogue in Brooklyn. S. Public Health Service Hospital in Staten Island here, as a possible small- pox carrier. Mrs. Ellen Siegel, who arrived here July 25 from Israel with her husband, Louis, to visit their children and friends in America, was ordered quaran- tined by Judge John F. Dooling, Jr., in Brooklyn Federal Court. Public health officers transfered Mrs. Siegel directly to the quar- antine facility immediately on her arrival here, because she had no certification that her May 31 vaccination had been effective, and because she had a history of unsuccessful vaccin- ations. They were also concerned with her having made a four-day stopover in Stockholm, which suffered a recent outbreak of 25 smallpox cases, four of which were fatal. Mr. Siegel, who was found to have been properly immunized, is staying with his wife during her isolation. Measure to Protect Israeli Claimants of Swiss Bank Assets JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The Knesset passed the first reading of a bill limiting the types of persons or institutions author- ized to deal with claims under the recently passed Swiss law, under which assets left in Swiss banks by Jews and others who perished during the Nazi holo- cause, will be revealed. Under Israel's draft measure, only attorneys will be enpowered to handle claims under the new Swiss law. However, the law would also enpower the Israel Attorney General and certain public institutions to represent claimants. The Swiss laws does not go into effect until Septem- ber 1, but various agents are already canvassing potential claimants in Israel. ported also that he inspected the new cemetery in Kiev, where thousands of Jews had been reinterred by the Soviet author- ities in the Ukrainian capital.
