Mendelsohn-Levy Troth Announced Suggests Macabees Academy Editor. The Jewish News: As an enlightened and pro- gressive group, the Jewish Com- munity has overlooked the need for our youth in military careers. This has been a grievous omission. Although we have developed leaders in every field of endeavor, we have scarcely done so in the military field. True, we have had our war heroes; but few, if any, have chosen the military as a career in peacetime. Why not? The Jew is no longer a non-aggres- sive nor a pacifist member of society. He has fought for his life and the life of his country all over the world. He has dis- played ingenuity and fortitude in Israel. Never, since the time of the Maccabees, has he been called upon to fight so often as in the past twenty years. My suggestion is to create a fund, operated through the sub- scriptions of American Jews, to send young boys to military academies throughout the coun- try. Spiritual guidance could be provided either by military chaplains or by local commun- ity Rabbis. Applicants would be accepted on the basis of scho- larship and financial need. The curriculum in these schools is broad. Students are given mili- tary training and physical fit- ness instruction in addition to their academic studies. The period encompasses the fourth through twelfth grades. We would hope that our outstand- ing students would go on to military or police colleges. This rough plan would be a double-edged endeavor. W e would be taking boys from broken and under-privileged homes off the hands' of our welfare agencies, and turning out good citizens. Jack Roth 5823 Highgate Dr. Baltimore 15, Md. Maimonides Hospital of Brooklyn Completes Ten Story Nurses' Residence NEW YORK (JTA)—Comple- tion of the new nurses resi- dence at Maimonides Hospital of Brooklyn was announced by Dr. Irvin J. Cohen, executive vice-president of the institu- tion. The 10-story building, located across from Maimonides Hospi- tal, has been designed to pro- vide modern living accomoda- tions for staff nurses. The sizes of the living units vary so that a single nurse, nurses wishing to zhare an apartment, or a nurse and her family can be accommodated. Cohen pointed out that one of the greatest problems facing New York City hospitals is the lack of adequate housing for personnel.
