Saul Harris Dies

TEL AVIV—Shlomo Lavi, a
former • Mapai member of the
Knesset and a founder of • the
Hakibbutz Hameuchad Move-
ment died Wednesday at Afula
Hospital at the age of 80.
He was a close associate of
former Prime Minister David
Ben-Gurion. Born in Plonsk,
Russia, Lavi settled in Pales-
tine in 1905 and was one of the
founders of Kibbutz Ein Harod
and was a founder of Hosho-
mer, the Jewish self defense
organization in Palestine. He
was the author of a number of
books and articles.

Antwerp Chief Rabbi
Dr. S. Sapira Dies

ANTWERP, (JTA) — Dr. S.
Sapira, chief rabbi of Antwerp,
died at the age of 72. The Mayor
of Antwerp and the Governor of
the province embracing that city
were among the prominent
mourners at the services.
Born in Roniania and the
holder of a doctorate in philoso-
phy and theology from the Uni-
versity of Berlin, Sapira had
lived in Belgium since 1935,
except for the war years, which
he spent in Cuba. He was chief
chaplain of the Province of Ant-
werp, and a professor at the
Royal L ye e u m. Among his
scholarly achievements was the
mastery of a total of 16 lan-
guages,

Phyllis Weiner Dies

A real estate dealer and
owner of a linen supply firm
here for more than 50 years,
Saul Harris of the Sheraton-
Cadillac Hotel died July 19. He
was 88.
Mr. Harris owned with his
son, Emanuel, the Cadillac
Tower and the Book Building.
Born in Germany, he was a
Detroit resident for 80 years.
Mr. Harris was a 32nd degree
Mason, a member of the Michi-
gan Sovereign Consistory,
R.A.M., the Shrine and Temple
Beth El.
Surviving Mr. Harris, in addi-
tion to his son, are a daughter,
Mrs. Anna Van Baalen; a sis-
ter, Mrs. Mamie Heilbronner;
f our grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Ser-
vices commemorating the first
anniversary of the death of Dr.
Abraham Granott, late presi-
dent of the Jewish National
Fund, were held at the Jewish
Agency auditorium.

Jewish Martyrs
Honored in Paris

PARIS (JTA)—Two commem-
orative services were held here
Sunday honoring the memories
of the 30,000 Jewish martyrs
who were rounded up by the
Nazis in occupied Paris and
herded into the Velodrome
d'Hiver, whence they were de-
ported to death camps. Floral
wreaths were deposited at the
site of the former Velodrome,
and at the Tomb to the Unknown
Jewish Martyr.

Phyllis Diane Weiner, wife of
Dr. Samuel P. Weiner, died
July 18. She was 26.
Mrs. Weiner, 13136 Winches-
ter, Huntington Woods, was an
art teacher in the Detroit pub-
lic schools. In addition to her
husband, she is survived by a Technion Will Expand
son, Ronald; her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Sol King; a sister, in Humanities Courses
