For an entire year his front page covers in Mercury, in 1948, were noteworthy. Often, his art work for ad- vertising copy attracted as wide attention for their ima- ginative effects as did his other illustrations. Now he ranks among the world's great artistic - geniuses, and his series of articles with Campbell in Life form the high- light in a great career. Arthur Lidov has his home and his studio in Poughquag, New York, but while working on his articles in Life he main- tains an apartment for himself, his wife, their son and daughter in mid-Manhattan. Incidentally, his w if e and children have acquired his love for art and all have shown ability as painters; sculptors and illustrator's. Before their m a r r i a g e, his wife, Sandra, taught English and poetry at Radcliffe. He was born in Chicago in 1917 and began drawing and painting at the age of 9. He earned his Bachelor of Socio- logy degree from the Univer- sity of Chicago at 19 and gave a year to the Illinois Project. Then he went to Palestine where he taught English, art and geometry at a high school, in addition to working as a surveyor's assistant, car- tographer a n d construction hand. He speaks Hebrew and has a fine Jewish family background. Upon his return to this country in 1938 he spent three years painting murals far the Illinois Art Project. Rejected for service by all of the U. S. armed forces—he was ill from accidental burns as a child for more than a year—he went into defense work as an inspector and machinist. Lidov is largely self-taught. His art works have been ex- hibited throughout this country and in other lands and his fame as an artist now is worldwide.
