Semantic Way of Cooling Off (Copyright, 1963; JTA, Inc.) BY DAVID SCHWARTZ There are many ways of coping with the hot weather. There is the semantic approach, If you think in terms of the seasons, of summer, winter, spring and fall, when summer comes aolng you expect it to be hot, and are. But if, instead, you take the approach current in the garment district, that there are only two seasons, slack and busy, your attitude becomes different. There is no more summer, so why be hot? It's just the slack season. So put on your slacks and this keeps you from "pants-ing" from the heat. There is the philosophical approach. As a man thinketh, so is he. Imagine yourself at the North Pole. All over is an ex- panse of ice and snow. The wind is howling. Suddenly you see an Eskimo come forth from his igloo. Where is he going this early in the morning? You won- der whether he is a Republican or Democrat. If he is a Republi- can, you ask yourself, is he for Goldwater or Rockefeller? Sud- denly you begin to shiver. Aniong the Jews, the homeo- pathic approach seems the favorite. Like cures like. When you are hot, you offset it, not with ice water, but by taking a glass of "varemes," a glass of warm tea. Papa used to always take three. He wasn't good at counting. Just like the story I heard about the pianist, Artur Schnabel and Einstein. They were friends and frequently played together, Einstein on his violin, Schnabel at the piano. In the midst of one exercise. Einstein made an error. Schnabel turned to Einstein and made a grimace. "Albert," he said to the great mathematician, "the trouble with you is you can't count." Speaking about a glass of tea, I remember one summer, Weiz- mann and Lipsky were sitting at Tiptoe Inn. Nearby, the waiter served a man a glass of tea. The man began stirring it with- out putting any sugar in. "Er iz a Wilner soicher," said Weiz- mann, "er misht aber legt nit arein." (He is a Wilna financier. He manipulates, but does not invest.) The Jewish State would not have been established without tea. Remember those Zionist conventions. The delegates in the evening would sit at Childs' restaurant till late at night drinking tea and dreaming of Zion. Try sitting late at night dreaming of Zion, eating cereal or even drinking coffee. You just can't linger over coffee. The mu n i c i p al legislation calling for the naming of a street after the founder of po- litical Zionism had been adop- ted at the initiative of the Mayor as a gesture of good will toward the city's Jewish com- munity. He invited them to a meal and on the plate of each student was placed a piece of soft, well cooked tongue along with a piece of raw and hard half-cooked tongue. All of the pupils ate the soft tongue. "Let that be a lesson to you," said the rabbi, "show people always- the soft tongue in your conversation."
