THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS — Friday, July 12, 1963 — 22 Louis Applebaum's Music Highlights Stra tford's Plays By LILLIAN SLOMOVITZ STRATFORD, Ontario — The laughter and merriment that rocked the Avon Theater at the opening of the current Strat- ford Festival has achieved an- other operetta success. Gilbert and Sulli- v a n's "Mika- do," with its blend of cle- ver lyrics and catchy tunes, was enhanced by Brian Jack- son's realistic new stage set- tings and cos- tumes. Credit f o r t h e musical achievements Applebaum of both the or- chestra and the voices goes to the energetic conductor, Louis Applebaum, under whose direc- tion the National Festival Or- chestra gave an effective and stylish interpretation to every melody. The music in this pro- duction was full, rich and pre- cthe. A capacity opening night audi- ence showed enthusiasm and gratitude for Applebaum's re- turn to Stratford after an ab- sence of three years, once again to direct the music festival 'which he founded in 1955. He had resigned in 1960 to become music consultant for CBC in Toronto. Eric House, Irene Byatt, Nor- man Campbell and an able as- sisting cast deserved high praise for a notable performance. "Mikado" will be presented 45 times during the next six weeks at Stratford. This year, the Stratford di- rectors and administration risked the staging of "Cyrano de Bergerac" without a well known name. But the little known actors will now surely become known everywhere as a result of their masterful performance. The Cyrano - role was done so superbly by John Colicos that lie will, no doubt soon be in the company of notable actors who have played that role. - Much of the visual appeal of the "Cyrano" production is in the wonderful stage sets and the beauty of the colorful cos- tumes. Once again, Tanya Moy- seiwitsch, with Desmond Heeley assisting, outdid herself. Miss Moiseiwitsch designed the ori- ginal Stratford Festival River- side Theater and found it a re- warding experience to design the exquisite costumes and scenery for "Cyrano." Alan Lund was responsible for the staging of the Marching Cadets' Song and the hauntingly beautiful "Chanting March" of the Monastery sisters. The orchestra and the sing- ing were fluently directed by Louis Applebaum, who was very deliberate in the tempo of the music, and emphasized the beauty of the voices. Each actor in the perfor- mance of "Cyrano" deserves individual high honors for cap- able portrayal of the assigned part.
