co3 ca a ti ›7; ;T.4 u) z U) E-1 A E-i Yeshivah Launches $1,000,000 Fund Campaign for Building, Maintenance of Beth Yehudah Schools Orthodox Jews Are Exempt from Sabbath Tests in Massachusetts The launching of a $1,000,000 building and maintenance fund for the Beth Yehudah Schools was announced at the•Yeshivah's "Char (18-for life) annual din- ner of the Synagogue Council by President Max Biber. Initial gifts approximating $113,000 were subscribed prior to the event. A campaign com- mittee will begin community- wide solicitation immediately for funds to start construction of the new Yeshivah campus in Southfield and provide main- tenance needs during the 1963- 65 school years for the 12-grade Beth Yehudah Day School. Rabbi Alexander Linchner, the guest speaker, is president of Mesifta Torah Vodaas in Brook- lyn, the largest Yeshivah in the world, lauded "the splendid group of Yeshivath Beth Yehu- dah students who have chosen to continue their Jewish education in our advanced studies depart- ment. We consider them out- standing in their studies, in their seriousness of purpose and in their strength of character." Six rabbis, 27 lay congrega- tional heads and five leaders of the Yeshivah's women's group were cited at the July 7 event for their distinguished service to Yeshivath Beth Yehudah during two decades of its opera- tion on Dexter Blvd., where six classrooms were opened in February, 1942, adjoining Mo- gen Abfaham synagogue. Sub- sequently, the Daniel A. Laven Building was constructed in 1954 to meet urgent needs of the fast growing school. Plan to Re-Establish Yeshiva in Jerusalem JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The cornerstone was laid here Mon- day at the entrance to Jerusa- lem for a building to house a yeshiva which had flourished in Galicia for 100 years until World War II broke out. The spiritual head of the transplanted Kochav Miyakov Yeshiva is Rabbi Dovberish Weidenfeld, the Czebin Rebbe, whose f a t h e r founded it in Hrumelov exactly a century ago. The yeshiva complex will ac- commodate 1,000 students, of whom 200 will be dormitory members. It will cost 1,000,000 pounds ($333,000) to complete. French Jewish Leider Michel Goudchaux, French Jewish statesman and banker, was one of the leaders of his country's liberal forces in the early part of the 19th century.
