Horwitz, mount Temple in Cleveland last year, has been put on ex- hibition for the summer in the Mansion Museum at Oglebay Institute in Wheeling, W. Va. After the Nazi nightmare, when helping agencies were struggling to repair the lives of the survivors, Horwitz, chair- man of the board of the Kaiser- Nelson Corp., Cleveland, went to France on a mission for • the Jewish Welfare Federaion. There, hundreds of Jews spoke of past lives that were only a memory and of their towns and villages and Jewish communities that were no more.. Then, one man, for whom Horwitz was arranging passage to Israel, presented him with a silver filigree menorah. It had been salvaged from kis de- stroyed house. by a Gentile neighbor, who returned,. it to him. This kindled within Hor- witz a desire to find and pre- serve other remnants of Jewish artistry before they completely disappeared. This Hanukah menorah is an 18th century filigree work from Eastern Europe, typical of Jew- ish folk art, with two columns, one on each side, surmounted by a crown with an eagle, and in the center, a portal of the Ark of the Torah, which also symbolizes Psalm 118:20, "This is the gate of the Lord, into which the righteous shall enter."
