(Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) WASHINGTON — Egypt has made an entirely new arms deal with the Soviet Union which may include aid to build up missile production and weapons of a more sophisticated nature than previously provided, it was learned Wednesday from gov- ernment sources. The arms deal is believed partly financed in a loan of $44,400,000 recently granted by Russia to the U.A.R. The loan. was disguised as covering "de- velopment of industrial prod- ucts." Announcement was made June 20 at the end of a two- week visit by an Egyptian dele- gation headed by Field Marshal Abdel Hakim Amer, com- mander-in-chief of N a s s e r's The Love Game At Grossinger's When it comes to tennis at Grossinger's, the score is love. The delegation included heads of the Egyptian air force, navy and the director of the Egyptian ordnance and weapons develop- ment section. Specific details are not yet available in Washington on weapons involved but it is believed that the new arrange- ment will not only cover equipment lost in Yemen by Egyptian forces but new weapons as well as more Soviet participation in the Egyptian rocket program. The agreement was signed on behalf of the Soviet Union by Russian Defense Minister Mars- hal R. Malinovsky. The new military agreement is the fourth major deal be- tween Egypt and the Soviet bloc since 1955. It was noted here that the new Egyptian - Russian accord followed the American agree- ment to supply Israel with anti- aircraft Hawk missiles for use against the jet bombers pro- vided by Russia to Egypt. State Department sources said the news would not affect plans to extend new economic assist- ance and loans to Egypt. But, Representative Sey- mour Halpern, New York Republican and co-sponsor of the Keating-Halpern Amend- - ment to sever aid to nations that divert their own funds for purchase of offensive So- vet arms, served notice that a vigorous fight will be waged in Congress to block further American funds for Egypt. The foreign assistance bill is now pending. Halpern told the House on Wednesday that in addition to the new arms transaction there were reliable reports of the use of poison gas bombs by Egypt in Yemen. Halpern said, "I do not feel that American taxpayer should subsidize the United Arab Republic by a single cent in view of its brutal and agressive policies. He issued an appeal 'to colleagues to support the Keating - Halpern Amendment which he said had already gained the backing of "many members" of both House and Senate. 1111) • LONDON, (JTA) — The con- ference of the European execu- tive of the General Zionists — the Goldstein-Halprin group — has unanimously endorsed the position of the World Confed- eration of General Zionists on the question of merger with the Confederation led by Dr. Eman- uel Neuman and on the decision against identification with any Israeli political party.
