(Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) TEL AVIV—Six infiltrators from the Gaza Strip were killed in two armed clashes with Is- raeli patrols, it was disclosed Tuesday. The most recent clash occurred Monday northeast of the north- ern edge of the strip when three infiltrators were killed and a fourth wounded and taken to an Israel hospital. Security forces have been put on a special alert because the infiltrating groups have in- cluded agents of Egyptian in- telligence sent to Israel for spy- ing purposes. One of those killed was an Egyptian who was inter- cepted on military training grounds in southern Israel. Elect Judge Sobeloff Trustee Emeritus of Brandeis University WALTHAM, Mass. (JTA) — Judge Simon E. Sobeloff of Baltimore, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Ap- peals for the Fourth Circuit, has been elected a trus- t e e emeritus of Brandeis University. Judge Sobel- off, who is a Sobeloff former presi- dent of the Baltimore Jewish Council, has been a Brandeis trustee since 1960. Former Sena- tor Herbert H. Lehman of New York was named a trustee emeritus last month. The Intolerant Rogers Hornsby By Harold U. Ribalow (Copyright, 1963, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) • He is dead now, the great right-handed baseball hitter, Rogers Hornsby, who had a lifetime batting mark of .358 and hit .424 in 1924, the highest average in the 20th century. There is no question that Hornsby was a great ball player. He was, however, a prejudiced, intolerant man, and Bill Sur- face, who worked with Hornsby on the player's autobiography, has written an essay for the Saturday Evening Post (June 15, 1963), stressing Hornsby's hatred for people, and Jews in parti ;Mar This is especially intriguing for Hornsby was involved in the career of Andy Cohen, a Jewish pioneer in major league baseball, back in the mid-1920's. Hornsby was, of course, much the better player and hatter, and when the newspapers compared the achievements of the two men. Cohen always ca.me out second best. Hornsby was not only superior as an athlete; he also disliked Jews, as Surface tells us. In the SEP article, Surface writes that Hornsby was a hard man and not a likable one. "His apparent prejudices," he writes, "against Jews and NegroeS were shocking but, on examina- tion, turned out to be simply two items in a long account- ing against the world." •Later on, Surface describes Hornsby's reaction to Jews in another context. The publisher of Hornsby's book had wanted the former star to come East to promote the -volumne. He couldn't make it and the pub- lishers called him about it. "Now, look, you New York Jews, don't get smart with me," Hornsby said. Surface told him, "The sales manager isn't Jewish. He's Irish." What was Horns- by's reply? "All those guys in New York is Jew." I wonder what he must have felt when the Giants got rid of him and gave over the second-base position to a guy named Andy Cohen? Upon re- flection, too, I no longer wond- er why Hornsby didn't succeed as a manager and was shunted about from club to club and had his difficulties in his last years 'with horse-racing being his obsession). He was a bitter, biased man and Surface's article does Hornsby no credit. There is more to life and baseball than hitting 400. Hornsby struck out in the game of life. U.S. Army Will Train 114 Israeli Troops on Hawk Missile Use WASHINGTON (JTA)— A group of 35 Israeli military technicians will arrive in the United States next month to be- gin training at the Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Ala., in the use of the U.S. Army's Hawk air defense missile. U.S. Army sources said that a total of 114 Israeli military men will be taught in this country to use and maintain the Hawk system. While Pentagon officials said that no contract has yet been signed, the imminent arrival of Israeli military personnel in connection with training in the Hawk system indicates that negotiations for the sale of the missiles to Israel are drawing to a close and agreement may be reached soon. A second group of Israeli technicians is scheduled to re- port to Fort Bliss, Tex., in Au- gust to begin drills in Hawk missile firing. Some time next year, seven Israelis will under- take a course at Fort Belvoir, Va. Israel is buying the super- sonic mobile missile to counter a dangerous buildup of air strik- ing power in Egypt. Although , built to knock down low-flying airplanes, the Hawk has shown it can intercept battlefield type missiles like the U.S. Honest John missiles which have a 12- mile range. Earlier this month, the U.S. Army set in motion a project to improve the Hawk's ability to engage tactical bal- listic missiles, the kind that might be encountered by a field army. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• • FOR IMMEDIATE RESERVATIONS TO • • HOTEL CONCORD and GROSSINGER'S • • BEE KALT TRAVEL SERVICE 0••••••••••••• CALL • • • Detroit Phone: • Birmingham Phone: • • • • • • JO 6-1490 MI 6-2170 • See•••••••••oomee•••emeosoomeesomP COTTAGES REILLY'S HURON HAVEN 450 feet of safe, sandy, no stone private beach On Lake Huron 2 AND 3 BEDROOM COTTAGES $85 to $130 Per Week Lower Rates to July 4 Openings in July PHONE 362-2626 or WRITE MRS. -REILLY, TAWAS CITY, BOX 303, MICHIGAN Sir Isaac Wolfson Elected Fellow of London Royal Society LONDON (JTA) — Sir Isaac .
