Dies at Age of 76

Mrs. Celia Shmarak, of Brook-
lyn, N. Y., mother of Sidney
Shmarak, advertising manager
of The Detroit Jewish News,
died in New York Saturday
night, after a prolonged illness,
at the age of 76.
Her body was brought to De-
troit for funeral services at
Kaufman Chapel on Tuesday
and for interment here. Rabbi
Irwin Groner officiated.
Before bringing her body for
burial here, funeral services
were held in New York Monday,
and tribute was paid to her
memory by leaders in the Work-
men's Circle and the Jewish
labor movement.
Mrs. Shmarak was active in
the Workmen's Circle and was
associated with the cultural
group of the Rand School.
She is survived, besides her
son, by two grandsons here, Dr.
Kenneth L. Shmarak and Ar-
thur Shmarak, a brother, Mor-
ris Besser . of Cleveland, and
a sister, Molly Glass.

Leib Spizman, prominent La-
bor Zionist leader who has ad-
dressed Detroit gatherings nu-
merous times, who was known
for his histories of labor Zion-
ist occurrences and personal-
ities and for his weekly radio
broadcasts in New York, died
June 20. His late residence was
at 200 Brighton 15th St., Brook-
lyn.
Surviving him is his widow,
Mrs. Ruth Gotfrid Spizman, and
a sister, Mrs. Rachel Ben Sho-
lom of Israel.
A native of Poland, Mr. Spiz-
man was a lifelong labor Zion-
ist who was named to the sec-

Leon (Louis) S. Schembeck,

23. He was 72.
Mr. Schembeck was a retired
J. L. Hudson Co. salesman. He
was a past president of Monte-
fiore Lodge and secretary of
the Northwest Improvement As-
sociation. Surviving are his
wife, Hazel; daughter, Mrs.
Maurice Schiller; brother, Dr.
I. S. Schembeck; two sisters,
Rachel and Rebecca; and three
grandchildren.

William Stoller Dies

Former 'Detroit produce dis-
tribution businessman William.
Stoller, who had lived here for
50 years, died June 22 in Los
Angeles. He was 78.
Mr. Stoller had retired and
moved to Los Angeles two years
ago. Surviving are his wife,
Gertrude; son, Samuel; daugh-
ter, Mrs. Harold Gorowitz; three
brothers, a sister and . three
grandchildren.

LEIB SPIZMAN

retariat of the World Union of
Labor Zionist Youth in 1934.
He was on the editorial board
of the Warsaw labor Zionist
newspaper the World.
He escaped to Japan in 1939
when the Nazis invaded Poland
and came to the United States
in 1940. He wrote for Yiddish
periodicals and was the author
of a dozen books on the history
of Halutziut and Zionism and
on the status of Jews under the
rule of the Nazis.
He was a member of the Far-
band-Labor Zionist Order na-
tional executive, on the execu-
tive of the Jewish National
Workers Alliance, member of
Yiddish Writers Union and sec-
retary of the Committee on the
History of Labor Zionism.
Mr. Spizman was on the sec-
retariat of the World Congress
for Jewish Culture and the di-
rector of its press department
and conducted a weekly Yiddish
radio program. He was former-
ly on the staff of the Yiddish
Daily Day.
His books, which were re-
viewed in The Detroit Jewish
News, included "Jews in Nazi
Poland," "The - Ghetto Upris-
ings," "Fifth Years of the La-
bor Zionist Movement".

20, at the age of 57, at the home
of her sister, Mrs. Ben Gould,
18490 Roselawn. Funeral serv-
ices were held at Kaufman
Chapel Sunday.
Surviving her in addition to
Mrs. Gould, are three other sis-
ters, Mesdames Fred Harris,
Jack Diamond and Sylvia Hel-
fer, and four brothers, Harry
J. of Los Angeles, Saul E., Au-
brey I. and Sanford N.
Miss Gordon was an account-
ing department employe of the
Railway Express Agency, Inc.,
for 40 years. She had moved to
Cincinnati 10 years ago, but re-
turned here in 1962. She was a
member of Hadassah, National
Council of Jewish 'Women, the
American Jewish Congress.
She was the daughter of Mor-
ris Aaron and Mary Fayga Gor-
don, early Detroit Jewish pio-
neers. Her father was active in
