(Not pictured der, Steven Grossman, Larry Meyerson, (second are Susan Litwak, Janet Mark, Mark Schurgin, row) Bob Polk, Aviva Kempner, Fran Schwartz, Diane Seiler. * * At an orientation meeting of all Histadrut campers from De- troit and vicinity held recently at the Labor Zionist Institute, final instructions were received by 23 teen agers ranging in age from 14 to 18 who are joining this year's Histadrut-sponsored camp program in Israel and Europe. . In anticipation of heavy reg- istration, the camp program has been considerably expanded with the addition of a two-week tour of Europe for the 16- to 18-year-olds. The 14- to 16-year- old group,, which will again stay at Hakfar Hayarok, will end its program with an eight-day tour in Europe before returning home. Included in the daily list of activities is a period set aside for fruit picking and other agri- cultural work along side a group of Israeli youngsters who will spend their summer at the camp with the American chil- dren. More than 140 American youngsters will go to Hakfar Hayarok located on the Medi- terranean not far from Tel Aviv. Another group of 140 will go to Bet Berl near Kfar Saba. A committee of three was formed at the orientation ses- sion to assist the Detroit Hista- drut staff in making the final arrangements. Sharing these responsibilities are Mrs. S. Dia- mond. Mrs. Lewis Grossman and * Mrs. Leslie Fensler. Announce- ment was made of a prize to be awarded to the camper who comes back with the finest set of still photographs. The panel of judges will be drawn from the parents of the children. The Histadrut office in New York announced that a film crew will record some of the activities of the children while in Israel. This film will have its initial showing in this area at the campers reunion scheduled for Sept. 13. At a campers orientation meeting which took place in New York last week, it was an- nounced that Melvin Gordon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gordon of Oak Park, was the winner of the national essay contest in which last year's campers participated. The prize of a $100 Israel Bond will be presented to Melvin at one of the major Histadrut functions this fall. 2 Films at Center "Two-Way Stretch," a farce featuring Peter Sellers, will be the first feature film in the Jewish Center's international film festival, Monday evening. An extra feature will be Rob- ert Benchley's lecture on "How to Take a Vacation," The films will be screened in the Aaron DeRoy Theater, beginning at 8:15 p.m. $275,000 Bond Sale at Schumer Event Rabbi Jacob E. The affair climaxed the 1963 Labor Zionist Movement-Landsmanshaften Israel Bond campaign, which re- sulted in Israel Bond subscriptions totaling about $275,000. Mrs. Morris L. Schaver was honorary chairman of the Schumer affair and Morris Lieberman was chairman. Standard Federal Savings to Open 11th Office Monday Monday will be a big day for Standard Federal Savings and Loan Association, and an equally big day for the families living in the Greenfield-Grand River area. At 10 a.m., doors of Standard Federal's spacious new branch office will be opened to the public for the first time, and "open house" will be held July 1-10. • Robert J. Hutton, president of Standard Federal, said every- one is welcome and that many unusual attractions will be of- fered for the benefit of the many visitors expected. On hand to give the public a warm, hospitable welcome will be James P. Donaldson, recently appointed manager of the new branch. He will be aided by an experienced, capable staff which includes William Sheere, Jr., Bette Wirth, Linda Muck and Louise Manning. A full-size Sanders layer cake will be given to each person who opens a savings account in the amount of $10 to $100 dur- ing the Grand Opening period. In addition to the cake, those who open an account of $100 to 1\ $500 will receive a handy metal 'lock box for storing valuables. New accounts of $500 or more will receive a beautifully en- graved, silver-plated tray by Rogers International. One of the feature attractions on opening day will be the ap- pearance of George Pierrot, world traveler and host on a televised travel show sponsored by Standard Federal Savings. He will greet visitors at the new branch on July 1, opening day only, from 10 a.m. until noon. - Sinai Hospital Wins 3 Achievement Honors in State-Wide Competition , . Sinai Hospital of Detroit took triple honors — including the grand prize--in the Fifth Hos- pital Achievement Contest co- sponsored by the Michigan Hos- pital Association and Michigan Blue Cross. The top prize in the state of $1,000 went to Dr. Sidney D. Kobernick, Sinai's Chief Pathol- ogist and Director of Laborato- ries. Kobernick won for the design and development of a specimen collection area at Sinai which saves up. to 1,200 hours of technologists' time in administering to individual pa- tients in their rooms. The speci- men collection area is a facility in which a number of patients requiring this lengthy test can be attended at one time. Sinai also won the $500 first prize in the 200 - 500 bed hos- pital classification. This was for a development by Sinai Surgical Division Chief Dr. Milton L. Sorock and Associate Director Henry R. Karpe for the reallo- cation of surplus beds from an obstetrical unit. Sorock and Karpe designed a "swing unit," a section of rooms which can be opened either to a surgical or an obstetrical unit as the case load may demand. Lois Smith, • Dietary Aide at Sinai, received an honorable mention certificate for her im- provements in the special diets for ulcer patients. The awards were presented by William McNary, president of Michigan Blue Cross, at the Nobel Prize Winner Gabriel Lippman, a French- Jewish physicist, was the sec- ond Jew to be given the Nobel Prize in physics. He received the award in 1908. His outstand- ing contribution was the in- vention of the process of color photography in 1891. Michigan Hospital Association's 44th Annual Convention at Traverse City. McNary empha- sized that the basic purpose of the hospital achievement con- test is to encourage hospital employes to develop money- saving and time-saving ideas and to make these available to other hospitals.
