Jewish funeral directors across
the country have joined with
Union of Orthodox Jewish Con-
gregations of America in a major
move to encourage Jewish fu-
neral practices on a nationwide
scale in conformity with reli-
gious law and tradition, it was
announced by Moses I. Feuer-
stein, national president of the
UOJCA.
Feuerstein told a press con-
ference here that an accord has
been reached between the Jewish
Funeral Directors of America,
Inc., and the Union of Orthodox
Jewish Congregations and the
Rabbinate Council of America,
which provides for increased co-
operation between the rabbinate
and the members of the associa-
tion. The subject of funeral
practices has been of consider-
able concern to the Orthodox
Livonia Congregation
to Hold County Fair
The Livonia. Jewish Congrega-
tion will hold a county fair noon
July 14 at 32070 W. Seven Mile,
Livonia. The public is invited.
Featured will be kiddie rides,
booths, games and prizes.
Do not ask the doctor, ask
Union and the Rabbinical Coun-
cil.
The agreement provides for
the distribution of a "Jewish
Funeral Guide" by the funeral
directors to Jewish families who
come to arrange for a funeral.
The guide, which was developed
by the Joint Funeral Standards
Committee of the Orthodox Un-
ion and the Rabbinical Council,
stresses the "profound religious
significance" of funeral service
which should express "in every
respect the dignity, sanctity and
modesty of a . solemn religious
service."
It disapproves ostentation,
calling upon the family and visi-
tors to "reflect in dress and de-
portment the solemnity of the
occasion." It declares that flow-
ers and music have no place at
the Jewish funeral service and
that embalming and viewing are
contrary to Jewish law.

Congressional Body
Hears Jewish Plan
on Service Corps
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — An
official of the National Jewish
Board suggested at a Congres-
sional hearing that the proposed
National Service Corps should
involve retired people as re-
cruits.
The suggestion was made by
Sanford Solender, executive vice-
president of the JWB, who testi-
fied in support of Senate Bill
1321, which would set up the
corps, popularly . known as the
"domestic peace corps." He told
the subcommittee that retired
teachers, nurses and social. work-
ers "possess special skills which
can be used with great value by
the National Service Corps."
Solender, immediate past pres-
ident of the National Conference
on Social Welfare, said the
need for the services the pro-
posed corps would provide was
great. and that local communi-
ties, agencies and organizations
would "benefit immeasurably by
fully sharing in the development
of local National SeKice Corps
programs."
