Purely Commentary TORONTO (JTA)—A Toronto rabbi said that swastikas smeared on synagogues and other Jewish buildings in the Toronto area should be left un- touched on the buildings as a public reminder that there were still individuals in the city filled with "hatred, depravity and per- version." Rabbi Erwin Schild of Adath Israel said the swastikas and anti-Semitic slogans should be allowed to remain until police caught the culprits. He con- tended that the smearings were "not a mark of shame for To- ronto Jewry" but rather "marks of shame for the community in general." He said that "by hastily scrub- bing off and covering up these marks we might give the appear- ance of being ashamed or hurt, thus encouraging further defac- ings of our buildings." Removing the smears, he added, also might "beguile people into thinking that we have eradicated the evil which lurks in depraved human minds." He also expressed strong op- position to suggestions that Jew- ish organizations take direct ac- tion to protect Jewish buildings and catch the culprits, declaring that "in an ordered society, the protection of property is the con- cern of government and police." But his very confidence in the emergence of a better understanding and the retention of good relations is encouraging. Nevertheless, it would be well for Negro leaders to under- stand that while exploitations of Negroes must be abandoned, there also devolves upon Negroes the duty to reduce inter- mediations, to prevent violence, as in the instance of the brutal attack on a white man in Detroit with shouts "this is for Louisiana, for Alabama," to teach their youth not to create terror for school children and to throw away their knives. The interpretation of the existing issue by a prominent Jew, the new chairman of the Bnai Brith Anti-Defamation League, Dare Schary, is important. A statement by Schary on "The Ordeal of American Negroes" declares: "ADL research in the South has found anti-Semitism among Negroes there too. Since the Supreme Court decision, the South has been a special target for the anti-Semitic and racist literature of such a man as Conde McGinley and his Common Sense, and the Thunderbolt of the National States Rights Party (notor- iously vile anti-Semitic periodicals). This material is now get- ting into the hands of Negroes too; the racist anti-Negro portions they take for granted and ignore—the anti-Semitic portions they seem to have a tendency to read and retain. "Negro anti-Semitism is a particular tragedy because it is so misguided. Responsible Negro leadership knows that Jews and Jewish organizations were often instrumental in forming the human relations councils that developed throughout the country immediately after World War II; in the educational campaigns for FEPC and other types of civil rights legislation that have gone into the statute books of scores of states in the past eigh- teen years; in the development of the whole course of human relations education throughout the country. "In his misguided, twisted way, the professional bigot recog- nizes this when he accuses Jews of trying to 'mongrelize' the nation or of being a moving force behind the Negro integration movement. `Mongrelization,' of course, is hardly the issue; democracy, security and equal opportunity are the sum total of the aims of human rights groups, Jewish or otherwise. "It may seem a remote notion to Americans in normal situa- tions, but many Negroes, in their anguish and impatience, com- pare Nazi Germany at the time it was persecuting and killing millions with the United States of America today. The equation cannot be made; all the force of federal government, the will of the majority, our law, and our common heritage are on the side of human rights. Nazi Germany's course was one of a con- stant downward spiral, into degradation and the pit of evil. But the mood of many Negroes is that they have long been con- demned to hell by white Americans and that gradualism— gradual release from purgatory as they see it—is not the answer." The latter point is particularly noteworthy. Too many— especially Jews—have likened the Negro's position to that of the Jews under the Nazis. Schary disproves it. There were lynch- ings of Negroes, and the world was horrified; but they were murders of individuals, not of six million who perished during an era when there was such silence from the Christian world that the blot will remain on non-Jews forever. The Nazi holo- caust, as Schary states, was government-inspired. The anti-Negro drive has always been that of a minority. In any event, the facts are on the record, and the position of the Jew vis-a-vis his black neighbor is a known fact. Let the truth serve to unite all peoples in the cause for decency and justice, and may there be an end to Negro anti-Semitism, just as there is certain to come a day—in our own lifetime—when race prejudice will be anathema to all Americans. Baer had directed the oper- ations of the camp, where an estimated 2,500,000 victims were slaughtered and cremated from the spring of 1942 until the end of the war. He and 23 other Auschwitz officials were awaiting trial on charges of mass murder and atrocities. The trial, scheduled to be held in Frankfurt next year, will con- tinue as originally planned, the officials said, despite the death of the most important de- fendant. When the war ended. Baer found work as a woodcutter under an _assumed name. He was found and arrested in De- cember, 1960, shortly after the state prosecutor's office offered a $2,380 reward for his appre- hension. His two predecessors as commandant, Rudolf Hoess and. A. Liebehenschel, were tried and hanged by the Poles. Documentary Film Shows Killing of Jews by Nazis in Latvia LONDON, (JTA) — The Latvian Soviet Socialist Repub- lic has produced a documentary film concerning the extermina- tion during the Nazi occupation of 150,000 Latvian Jews, accord- ing to reports received here today. The film is unusual in that, unlike previous Soviet war films, it makes no attempt to- hide cases in which non-Jewish local population cooperated with Nazis in carrying out their program- of genocide in the Latvian capital of Riga and other cities in the Republic. It gives names and addresses of German and Latvian war crim- inals still at large who took part in one of the mass killings. Among those listed .are Heinrich von Lohse, who the film says, is living in West Germany and Herbert Cukurs, a Latvian, said to be living in Sao Paulo, Bra- zil. Von Lohse, whose name also appears in files of known war criminals as "Loose," served the Nazis as Reichskomissar for the Ostland and was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment in 1948, but was released in 1951. 2 out of 5 U.S homes are owned debt-free It is an amazing fact that forty per cent of all American families who live in their own homes own those homes free of any debt of any kind.
