S. citizens,. with equal rights and obliga- tions to our country. Therefore my children shall not attend a Jewish school. They receive a fine education in the public schools." Is this parent correct? We say, No! For a Jewish child a public school education, no mat- ter how fine it may be is in- sufficient. No Jewish child can be adequately prepared for adult life, nor enjoy his child- hood completely without having his general education supple- mented by a Jewish education. Jewish education is impor- tant not only for the positive values which it transmits, but also for the psychological well- being of the child. No Jew can feel emotionally secure without having developed affirmative Jewish attitudes and without knowledge of his antecedents, his derivation and his cultural heritage. The child must know the meaning of being a Jew, he must understand the character of his people and must want to identify himself with them. If the parents fail to afford him an opportunity to do this through Jewish education they are not only denying him a valuable background of knowl- edge and information, but are endangering his chances of de- veloping a well-rounded and emotionally stable personality.
