Remnant of Israel

By DANIEL L. TICKTON
There exist no greater friend-
ships and feelings of together-
ness than among the shearit
Yisroel (remainder of Israel) in
the neighborhoods where Ne-
groes have just about taken over
all the residences, with only an
occasional sprinkling of a Jewish
family here and there.
These' are usually elderly
people, their children married
and gone. These people often
can not afford the prohibitive
costs of moving, the expenses of
new furnishings, of new-fangled
gadgets and innovations. Theft
homes are now filled with
scratched tables, shaky, uncer-
tain chairs, faded rugs, and mis-
shapen sofas.
So, on the Sabbath afternoon,
after a peaceful slumber to rest
their spirits, you can come across
an elderly couple or a confirmed
bachelor walking slowly to visit
some other Jewish friends in
the neighborhood who still re-
side there. A kettle is always
kept on the range filled with
boiling water so that one can
have a glass of tea and some
mandel-kichel (nut cake) to nib-
ble on, to be followed by some
grapes or the other fruits that
may be in season. •
With Reubin, a confirmed
bachelor, an employe of Dodge
factory, a real shoer Shabbos
(Sabbath observed), winds his
handkerchief around his wrist,
for he does not carry anything
in his pockets on the Sabbath.
Neither does he answer the
phone or ring the door bell, be-
cause it is a connection of elec-
tricity. He recites a blessing
before and after meals, prays
three times c:aily; a yarmulke
(skull cap) is always. to be found
in his possession. He was a pious,
observant. devout individual.
It is Sabbath, and Reubin
gently knocks at my door, kisses
the . rezuzzah (door post ritual
amulet) when he enters, and
boisterously wishes me a good
Shabbos. A firm hand shake fol-
lows. He wipes the 'trickles of
perspiration from his forehead
and makes himself comfortable
on one of my lounging chairs.
"Come," I tell him."have
glass of tea and a cookie."
He helps himself to a glass of
tea . from the heated tea kettle
on the gas range, and I place
before him some mandel-kechel.
I then hear a blessing and the
crunching sound of the kichel.
"Excellent, excellent, a me-
chayeh” (very tasty), he says.
Then he blows on the hot tea .
and begins to cautiously sip it.
He finished his tea; we talked
humorously about things in gen-
eral. Then a serious timbre came
to his voice.
"What I have to say now is
very confidential." A pause. "For
years I didn't have a care. After
years and years of rooming with
Reb Leib, I now have to find
myself new quarters."
"So what?". I interjected.
"Look in The Jewish News want
ads; there are many rooms to
rent, all over the city."
"Sure, certainly. Rooms every-
where, with television, f a n c y
wash rooms, newly decorated,
plush, exquisite, furniture, and
so on. Doesn't mean a thing to
me. I want a small room at a
strictly kosher family with my
own kitchen privileges to do my
own cooking; I want the use of
the refrigerator so that I can
prepare my own meals, use my
own pots, buy my• own challeh
(bread of fine white flour) for
my meals for the Sabbath, pre-
pare my lunches to take out with
me to the factory."
"Up to August a year ago I
was the happiest person in the
city. Observed each Sabbath at
the corner synagogue, which was
only four minutes' walk from
my house. I thought life would
remain thus. Chaikeh, my land-
lady, was herself a pious woman,
happy to receive my weekly
rent, a woman in good health

Reform Rabbis Convention Issues
Plea for Jewish Ecumenical Spirit

PHILADELPHIA, (JTA) —
The place of the American Jew
and the role of the American
Jewish Community in American
society was analyzed at the
four-day convention of the Cen-
tral Conference of American
Rabbis, the rabbinical arm of
the Reform branch of Judaism.
Rabbi Albert G. Minda of
Minneapolis, president of the
CCAR, told the convention in
his keynote address that "Prov-
idence and history" have com-
bined to permit the Jews and
Judaism "to carve out their
destiny" in America, in "this
ideological context inspired by
the genius of our faith."
Rabbi Minda expressed dis-
may that "inter-group relation's
in the American Jewish scene
are marred and distorted at
times with lack of confidence."
Referring to the current Chris-
tian concern with "ecumeni-
ity," he said that something of
the same sprit is long due on
the Amercan Jewish scene.
"Lack of communication and
separatist action account for
much of the confusion and
waste of energy and resources
which characterize many of our
organizations in the fulfillment
of their programs," he said.
"It is, indeed, high time that
we, too, catch something of the
ecumenical spirit. We must
learn to speak to each other
and to act together when com-
mon purpose demands."
The CCAR president also dis-
cussed American home and fam-
ily life and said that it is
"undermined" by seven factors.
He cited "juvenile delinquency,
sexual immorality, illegitimate
births, alcoholism, the divorce
rate, the deterioration of parent-

child relationships and the dis-
appearance of the home as a
sanctuary of religion." He de-
scribed as "alarming" the statis-
tics of illegitimate births, and
noted that the divorce rate also
included "marriages of teen-
agers."
"As rabbis," he declared, "we
have leaned too heavily on the
social worker and 'the psychia-
trist and their techniques which
often do not include the re-
sources of religion applicable
to the rehabilitation of the fam-
ily. Depth studies which they
have made frequently do not
include the depths of spiritu-
ality, which we as religious lead-
ers must tap and. use in this
realm of human life." .
