—P. S.

Rabbi Herbert Tarr might not
have written his novel, "The
Conversion of Chaplain Cohen."
published by Bernard Geis Asso-
ciates (130 E. 56th, NY22) and
he might have remained in the
rabbinate, had it not been for
his own chaplaincy experiences
in Texas, Louisiana and Labra-
dor.
• It is evident that his entertain-
ing novel is the result of his
personal reactions to the people
he had worked with, to the role
of the chaplain and to the areas
in which he served after being
ordained rabbi by Hebrew Union
College.
Rabbi Tarr has left his Long
Island congregation to devote
himself to a literary career (see
Jewish News Commentary, May
17). His novel "The Conversion
of Rabbi Cohen" is being made
into a movie, and he may be
dividing his time between Holly-
wood and New York, now that
he has given up his home in
Westbury, N. Y., to assist in the
preparation of his play, "The
New Frontier," which is sched-
uled for a Broadway run after
tryouts in Philadelphia and New
Haven.
