NEW YORK—James Farmer,
executive director of the Con-
gress for Racial Equality, as-
serted Tuesday night that anti-
Semitism among Negroes was in-
creasing as one aspect of the
militancy of the Negro fight for
civic rights.
He said that he deplored such
anti-Semitism, which he said was
fanned by the Black 'Muslims
and other Negro nationalist
groups, but he also contended
that Negroes were frequently
exploited by tenement owners
and rent . collectors who were
Jewish. He made the statements
at a meeting of the American
Jewish Congress.
Shad Polier, national vice-
president of the AJC, replied
with a call for toleration by the
Negro which, he said, the Negro
was asking of white men.
Meanwhile, Rabbi Mordecai
Kirshblum, president of the Re-
ligious Zionists of America, ap-
pealed at the annual conference
of the organization for the spir-
itual leaders of all faiths to com-
bat discrimination against Ne-
groes. He pointed out that Jew-
ish religious law rejects "any
form of hatred, social injustice
and segregation against human
beings regardless of the color of
their skin, the tenets. of their
religion and the national back-
ground of their ancestors."
