The Kaddish is recited in the
Aramaic instead of in the He-
brew tongue.
A variety of reasons are given.
The Tur claims that this is be-
cause the Kaddish was originally
recited after public Torah dis-
courses, and the populace who
attended d i d not understand
HebreW as well as Aramaic, the
latter being the vernacular of
the day. The Kabbalists (Zohar)
claim that the Aramaic was used
because it was a secular lan-
guage compared to Hebrew, the
Holy tongue, to demonstrate that
the Almighty is sanctified even
in the secular world, which
some people try to say is not
within His province—but which
Judaism always maintained was
just as much within His province
as the Holy Spheres. There are
some who claim that the Kaddish
was recited in the Aramaic
tongue so that the angels would
not understand it and try to
prevent its rising heavenward.
Extolling the Almighty, as we
do in the Kaddish, is an act
which the angels perform, and
they seem to be very jealous of
their prerogative being • pre-
empted by earthly mortals. Juda-
ism maintains, however, that
man can and does rise to the
level of the angels—and thus he
can extol the Almighty like the
angels do.

Stephen Klein, president of
Barton's Bonbonierre and or-
thodox Jewish lay leader, cited
the C h i nuch
Atzmai in Is-
rael as being
the apex of
Torah Schol-
arship and
juvenile de-
cency in a
pronounce-
ment upon
his recent re-
turn from
Israel. He
said:
Klein
"In the United States the per-
centage of Juvenile delinquency
in orthodox Jewish parochial
schools amounts to naught. The
Torah Scholars spearheaded by
the late Rabbi Aaron Kotler,
accepted as the great Torah
authority of our age, translated
this phenomenal experience to
read that the teaching of the
existence of the divine power,
the ultimate 'why' for practicing
mortality, is the only workable
bulwark against Juvenile delin-
quency."

Congregation of Bnai Jacob Will
Occupy New Synagogue on July 1

Bnai Jacob Synagogue, one
of Detroit's oldest Orthodox
congregations, will occupy its
new sanctuary at 20470 Hub-
bell, about July 1, announced
building committee chairman
Sam Rosenberg.
A dramatically soaring tim-
bered roof reaches its apex over
the Holy Arc. The synagogue
features exposed brick interior
walls highlighted by a beamed
ceiling.
The upper level contains the
major vestibule and sanctuary,
and lighting will be by means of
candelabras which direct read-
able light downward, as well as
providing sufficient light up-
ward to express the beamed
ceiling.
Natural light filtering through
a skylight is used to illuminate
the Holy Arc and Bima.
Designed by Sanford Rossen,
Architects, the upper level of
the new synagogue is devoted
entirely to religious use while
the lower level contains kitchen
and banquet facilities. Dual
kitchens have been provided
for the preparation of dairy
and meat foods to conform with
dietary laws.
An enclosed garden is en-
tered through an archway. With-
in the main garden wall are
two stone plaques preserved
from the original Bnai Jacob
Synagogue which was founded
on King St. nearly a half-

century ago.
Public areas within the new
building are air-conditioned and
there is a parking lot adjacent
to the synagogue.
The congregation announces
that applications for member-
ship are being accepted. Inqui-
ries can be made to Sol Nus-
baum, membership chairman,
342-3129.
