Jewish educators and those
abroad, were adopted at the
NCJE 37th annual conference. --
Dr. Elazar Goelman, dean of
Gratz College, Philadelphia, was
elected president of the Coun-
cil, succeeding Dr. Joseph Dia-
mond of Toronto. Elected with
him were Albert Elazar of De-
troit, Dr. Isidor -Margolis of
New York, . Dr. Eisig Silber-
schlag of Brookline, Mass., Irwin
Soref of Los Angeles, vice-presi-
dents; Reuben Resnik of Buf-
falo, treasurer; Frances Gelbart
of New York, secretary.
FolloWing his election, Goel-
man stated that Jewish educa-
tion is basically to be viewed as
a struggle against ignorance of,
and indifference towards, Jew-
ish life. "To win this battle we
need more than battle cries and
popular slogans, we need more
and better teaching personnel
and a favorable climate by the
lay and religious school authori-
ties, seriously engaged in the
effort to disseminate Jewish
education," he declared:
Nathan Brilliant, who served
as executive director of the Bu-

reau of Jewish Education in
Cleveland for many years, and
a former president of NCJE,
was tendered a testimonial on
the occasion of his retirement
from office.
The Jewish Library Associa-
tion conducted its second an-
nual conference in conjunction
with the NCJE. This conference
dealt with methods for better
service to the community, the
status of the librarian in an in-
stitution and the place of Amer-
ican Jewish literature in the
library.

ARLINGTON, Va., (JTA)-
John C. Vinson, Jr., 18-year-old
adherent of Neo-Nazism and a
known smearer of swastikas,
was found guilty of a first de-
gree murder here in the fatal
shooting last September of
Lewis M. Goldfein, 17, a Jewish
honor student. First degree
murder in Virginia is punish-
able by death or a prison sen-
tence of from 20 years to life.
Vinson, whose father is a
Washington, -D. C. policeman,
had been under confinement
since his arrest for the crime,
but psychiatrists found him able
to distinguish right from wrong
and, therefore, competent to
stand trial. The psychiatrists'
testimony portrayed Vinson,
who was fascinated by Nazism,
as possessing a strong potential
for hatred and violence.
Judge Albert V. Bryan, Jr.,
said Vinson's actions were "de-
liberate and purposeful," noting
that he had carefully armed
himself with a revolver and ex-
tra ammunition before going to
the Goldfein home.
Dr. William Enos, a patholo-
gist who is also an expert in
ballistics, testified that Gold-
fein was shot three times in
what the doctor termed a delib-
erate, aimed series of shots.
The judge, who will pronounce
sentence next month, said Vin-
son's mental condition "may
mitigate punishment, but not
the offense."
