GRADUATION and Ladybird Johnson, wife of the Vice-President, has redressed an Arab envoy in Washington with deft diplomacy. Najdat Fathi Safwat, Iraqi charge d'affaires, had requested that Mrs. Johnson withdraw her name and position as honorary chairman of an Israel 15th an- niversary independence ball to be held in the nation's capitol on Sunday evening. Replied Mrs. Johnson: "The easiest course for the wife of a public official would be, of course, never to lend name, hand or heart to any endeavor, charitable or com- memorative. Alas, letters such as yours make this procedure even more tempting. "However, I have . . . tried to be accessible and available to as many as possible, without distinction as to religion, race or region, and certainly includ- ing all states of the Near East. I shall continue to do so." . It was reported that Safwat found Mrs. Johnson's reply to be unsatisfactory. ALL HAPPY OCCASIONS!
