As a result, there has been a wave of. selling of synagogues. The trend has been to relocate these synagogues, particularly in the sub- urbs. In several instances staggering amounts of money have been spent for new places to worship in. I will not go into detail here as to the merit of such enterprises. My concern is for and with the smaller congregations. They seem inclined to follow the lead of the big ones. They, too, are thinking in terms of building new synagogues to replace the dislocated ones. Or, fail- ing in this, to re-locate in stores. I question the necessity of wisdom of this. It is a fact that several of the existing congregations are now hard put to attract- a "minian" for their daily morning or afternoon services. Or both. Let us remedy this situation. As President of the Congregation Beth Joseph (Rizhiner Shul), I - put forth this proposition: We invite you, who are presently without syna- gogues, whether as single worshipers or collectively as a congregation, to join us. The Congregation Beth Joseph is conveniently located in north- west Detroit, at 18450 Wyoming. Though moderate in size, it is con- structed beautifully, and offers complete accommodations.. It is unique among synagogues in that it is free of any mortgage; there are no assess- ments of any kind to members; maintenance costs are kept to a minimum. Moreover our's is a prosperous congregation in an even more important respect: we have shaharith and minchah-maariv services that are always attended in large numbers. Sabbath services are stimulating and inspiring. To you, worthy rabbis and officials of the dislocated synagogues, we extend this opportunity to become an integral part of it all. No strings attached. The Rizhiner Shul has played an important role in the Jewish religious life of Detroit for the past 50 years. It is well known, I'M sure, that our doors have always been open to the .indigent. Seats for the High Holidays are always available, free, to those who wish to worship. No Jewish boy and his parents will ever be denied the simchah of a Bar Mitzvah because of lack of financial means. Beth Joseph provides its facilities, without charge, and contributes a substantial Kiddush. All of this is accomplished without any embarrassment to the families involved. It is in this spirit that I convey my message, and look forward to discuss these matters per- sonally with you. Sincerely yours, HYMAN KARP President, Congregation Beth Joseph, Anshei Rizhin
