assistant to the late victed and given a sentence of
Adolf Eichinann at Budapest, five years at hard labor. While
to Israel, Egypt was granted a retrial by Ger- awaiting retrial at Frankfurt,
the war and he took occasion
to criticize de Gaulle whom he
accused of hurting the cause
of freedom in the world.
In his appeal for all out aid
to Israel, he emphasized that
the U.S. must protect her
known friends and he called
Israel this country's strongest
democratically that is bridging
the continents of Africa and Asia
for democracy. Describing Is-
rael's program of technical aid
to African nations and the many
other Israeli accomplishments,
Roosevelt said he would go so
far as to have our Mediter-
ranean Fleet send Marines into
Israel to support Israel's army
in the event of an attack upon
Israelis by Arab states.
The evening's success was
heightened by the participa-
tion of Lew Norman. A good
story teller and a lover of
, Yiddish, he proved an excel-
lent fund-raiser with his ap-
peal to the audience. Also—
he showed unusual skill by
naming every person in the
audience after having met
each one by going from table
to- table. Evidencing a re-
markable memory he was able
to repeat all the names of
attendees without a single
note, resorting only to mem-
ory. He entertained the gath-
ering with a recitation in
the original from Sholem
Aleichem.
The tribute to Schlussel was
'paid by Rabbi Israel I. Hal-
pern, who reviewed the many
accomplishments of the guest
of honor in a score of move-
ments—Zionist, religious, com-
munal. Rabbi Halpern also gave

WASHINGTON, (JTA)—Israel
and Egypt will get "sizeable
loans" from the United States in
the fiscal year of 1963, William
S. Gaud, assistant administrator
of the bureau for_Near East and
South Asia in the U. S. Agency
for International Development,
told the House Foreign Affairs
Committee, it was revealed this
week. •
Gaud said the Clay Commis-
sion urged that there be no loans
to Israel after fiscal 1963. "This
year," he reported, "we have
upped the interest rate on Is-
rael's loans from three-quarters
of one percent to two per cent,
and we have told the Israelis it
will go to three and one-half per
cent next year." The Aid official
said "it is getting to the point
where we are getting them down
to commercial terms." He
stressed that he did not agree
with Gen. Clay's view on loans
because "it is a question only of
whether you do it all at once, or
over a period of time."
More than 250 members of
Congregation Beth Abraham
and friends and associates of
Irving W. Schlussel joined Mon-
day night in honoring him at a
testimonial dinner held at the
Jewish Center as part of the
synagogue's participation in the
Israel Bond drive. The pur-
chase of $50,000 in Israel Bonds
by those attending the dinner
set a record for the congrega-
tion's services to Israel.
In the major address of the
evening, Elliott Roosevelt de-
clared that the U.S. must sup-
port Israel and must help the
Jewish State move forward add-
ing: "We must stick with them
or we will fall with them." He
declared that Israel, as this
country's major friend in the
Middle East, depends on Israel
for the protection of democratic
ideas in that area.
Commending participants
in Israel Bond activities he - -
said: "You are performing
a patriotic service not to Is-
rael but to your own country ,
by buying Bonds and are
thereby providing security for
your children and mine."
Roosevelt said he was carry-
ing on the work of his mother,
Eleanor Roosevelt, in support-
ing the small Israeli state. He
recalled that he was among the
first, while serving in the U.S.
armed forces, to protest against
the spreading neo-Naiism after
many's highest federal court, at
Karlsrube, after being convict-
ed by a Frankfurt district court
of the wartime murder of 1,200
Hungarian Jews.
The high tribunal found that
there "nad been legal errors in
the Fr ankf u r t proceedings,
—
however, Hunsche faces still an-
other case. He is scheduled to
go on trial soon for having
helped murder 40,000 other
Jews.
