Bishop Attacks Play on Pope Pius' Danny Raskin's Stand Toward Nazi Killing of Jews FRANKFURT, (JTA) — Ger- many's most controversial drama, "The Deputy," by Rolf Hochhuth, a play that accuses the late Pope Pius XII of indif- ference to the mass murder of the European Jews during the wartime Nazi holocaust, drew the fire of Dr. Wilhelm Kempf, Bishop of Limburg. In his sermon at the Limburg Cathedral, Bishop Kempf said the play had been based on "mere assumptionS, not on facts." Hochhuth, a young Ger- man, -is considered one of the country's outstanding play- wrights: Not since the Eichmann case has any public event stirred so much controversy in this coun- try as has the production of "The Deputy." Since its debut in Berlin, last February, the play has stirred bitterness and , sharpest dispute. Catholic churchmen, scholars and lay- men have accused the play- w r i g h t of anti-Catholicism. There are reports that the Papal Nuncio at Bonn is investi- gating whether a legal case DYNA INN 14355 LIVERNOIS Near Oakman Complete BUSINESSMEN'S $ 7 35 LUNCHEONS 111 Complete DINNERS exists for a possible libel suit against the playwright, who is accused of defaming the mem- ory of the late Pius XII. France Determined to Impose Status Quo on Mid-East Borders PARIS, (JTA)--The French government is "determined" to impose a territorial status quo between the Arab States and Israel, Foreign Minister Maurice Couve de Murville assured par- liament's Foreign Affairs Com- mittee. "Non-intervention in the in- ternal affairs of foreign states," he declared, '"does not rule out on the part of the Western gov- ernments the implementation of certain responsibilities to impose the status quo between Israel and the Arab states." Going one step further, and mentioning specifically the 1950 Tripartite Declaration by France, Britain and the United States, which guaranteed the integrity of the Israeli-Arab borders, the Franco-Israeli Alliance voted a resolution calling upon the gov- ernment to intervene in the Middle East, in accord with that 1950 measure, "and safeguard the equilibrium of power and the independence of all states in the Middle East." The resolution was adopted at a meeting celebrating Israel's anniversary, attended by leading French political figures and in- tellectuals. Among those pres- ent at the meeting were four members of the cabinet and more than 100 members of the Chamber of peputies and Sen- ate.
