Congregations to Hear Appeals for Jobs for Senior Citizens Tomorrow A call was issued this week by Rabbi Morris Adler and by Robert Kasle, president of Jewish Vocational Service, urg- ing local congregations to dedi- cate this Sabbath to the effort to secure employment for re- tired elderly persons. Philip Gilbert, for more than 40 years one of the leaders here in the Zionist movement and in educational circles, has as- PHILIP GILBERT sumed the voluntary post of business representative for the project, which has received en- couragement from the Baron de Hirsch Fund, a subsidy from which is covering costs of the project that has begun to func- tion under the direction of the Vocational Service. Dr. Adler, in his appeal to his rabbinical colleagues for co- operation in • presenting the problem to congregants at serv- ices tomorrow, pointed to the urgency to provide jobs "for re- tired persons who have serious economical and psychological needs to work." Kasle, in a supplementary ap- peal, said that "the senior citi- zens have the advantage of ex- perience, loyalty and depend- ability to offer an employer." Gilbert said he undertook this task upon his own retirement from business less than a year ago. He said he was deeply moved by the desire of elderly persons to work and that he had set out "in the hope of breaking down walls if necessary" to se- cure as many jobs as possible. Recognizing the difficulties, he said he was heartened by the rabbis' cooperation and ex- pressed the hope that a new response will come as a result of the congregational appeals this Sabbath. Those who have jobs to offer to elderly persons are asked to call the Jewish Vocational Service, WO 1-8570. Congregation Elects Convert as President NEWARK, Del., (JTA)—Lee Riddle, a convert to Judaism in 1961, has been reelected to his second term as president of this Delaware town's Jewish Com- munity, Inc., a congregation af- filiated with the United Syna- gogue of America and the only one in the Delaw;'re city. Riddle's Jewish life began in 1945 when, as a Navy personnel chief, he married a Jewish WAAF in a non-sectarian mili- tary ceremony. After his con-. version, they were re-married in a traditional Jewish cere- mony. He attended the Academy for Judaism which is conducted by the Philadelphia Branch of the Rabbinical Assembly of Amer- ica as a member of the Acad- emy's first class. Riddle, who retired from the Navy after 20 years, operates a printing plant. Two of the couple's four sons have been Bar Mitzvah. His congregation has been worshipping in a house but a building fund drive has reached the point where ground has been broken for a synagogue building and religious school near the campus of the Univer- sity of Delaware.
