He played a leading role in the development of med- icine and the extension of medi- cal education in Israel. Born in the Ukraine, Jarcho was educated in the United States and abroad. He was a founder, president of the medi- cal board and chairman of the executive committee of Syden- ham Hospital in New York, where the medical library was officially named in his honor in 1946: He was the inventor of the Jarcho pressometer, a de- vice used in the diagnosis and treatment of female sterility. An honorary member of the Israel Medical Association, Jar- cho in 1919 began sending med- ical • literature to Palestine where physicians were badly in need of them. He was the founder of the Dr. Julius Jarcho Medical Library of the Hebrew University which includes 24 individual medical libraries throughout the country for the use of Israel's physicians. He was also a member of the board of governors of the Hebrew University and a founder of the American Jewish Physicians Committee, which is now the medical board of the American Friends of the Hebrew Univer- sity.
