Report Zalman Shazar Is Assured
of Election to Israel Presidency

TEL AVIV (JTA)—The elec-
tion by the Israel parliament of
veteran Zionist Zalman Shazar
as President of Israel to succeed
the late Itzhak Ben-Zvi became
a virtual certainty after the Na-
tional Religious Party decided
by a majority vote to support
his candidacy.
The decision came after a dra-
matic vote by Religious Party
members of 12 for and f iv e
against. A last minute approach
by the Herut Party for a differ-
ent candidate to keep all major
government posts from being
under Mapai control was re-
jected by the Religious Party.
Even the Poale Agudat Israel

Party decided to support Shazar
but the party will not second his
nomination, agreeing simply to
join in an affirmative vote. If
these decisions are implemented
in the balloting, Shazar would
have a majority of nearly 80
votes in parliament. Balloting
will take place May 21. .
Leaders of the Liberal Party
meanwhile nominated Dr. Peretz
Bernstein, a Liberal leader, as a
candidate after Dr. Pinchas
Rosen, Liberal and former Jus-
tice Minister, declined to run
because no other party would
support his candidacy.

Politician Accused
of Nazism Returned
to German Bundestag

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

DUSSELDORF —Protests
against the return of former
Minister for Refugees Theodor
Oberlander to the Bundestag
were lodged Tuesday with the
president of the Bundestag, Dr.
Eugen Gerstenmaier, by the
Conference of East German
Refugees.
The Conference, which has
just concluded its convention,
complained that Oberlander dur-
ing the Hitler regime "fostered
National Socialism."
Several years ago, Oberlander
resigned from the post of Minis-
ter for Refugees under charges
that he had been involved with
a group that condoned the mur-
der of Jews in Lvov during the
Nazi Army's occupation of that
city. However, he finished the
term he then held in the Bunde-
stag. Now, it was disclosed here,
he has been appointed to fill a
Bundestag seat vacated by the
death of a deputy from Lower
Saxony. He was defeated when
he ran for that office in the last
elections.

Anti-Semitic Float
In Austrian Carnival

VIENNA, (JTA)—One of the
features of the carnival proces-
sion of Mallnitz was a "Jews
sion
float" with two Jews represented
by municipal workers in the best
Nazi tradition, it was reported
here.
The float showed an inscrib
tion reading "Jews Eichmann
spared because of poverty." On-
lookers shouted anti-Semitic re-
marks as the float passed by.
