Bigotry Disseminated in Ruhr Mailboxes DUSS'ELDORF, (JTA ) —Leaf- lets bearing anti - Semitic at- tacks on Jews and on the West German trade union movement were found in Herne, a large city in the Ruhr, mostly in mailboxes. One of the slogans was "The Jewish race lies and agitates everywhere." Another declared that the trade union movement was "a Jewish business" and demanded that "all Jews be turned out of our union. The present chairman of the move- ment is a Jew, Ludwig Rosen- berg. Beatrice Friedman Dies Active in community organi- zations, Mrs. Beatrice Friedman, 18669 Sorrento, died May 5. She was 34. Mrs. Friedman, a native of Chicago, had lived here for 15 years. She was a member of the Music Study Club, the Detroit Symphony, the Le ague of Women Voters, Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood, National Council of Jewish Women and Hadassah. Rabbi Voorsanger, Formerly of Grand Rapids, Dies at 71 SAN FRANCISCO, (JTA)— Rabbi Elkan Cohen Voorsanger, who served as senior chaplain with the American Expedition- ary Force in France during World War I and after with the Joint Distribution Committee in Europe, died at his home here where he lived in retirement for the last three years. He was '71. Born in San Francisco, the son of a rabbi, he was graduat- ed from the University of Cin- cinnati in 1913. He was or- dained at Hebrew Union Col- lege in 1914 and served at Tern- ple Emanuel in Grand Rapids, Mich. Later he served as rabbi of Temple Shaare Emeth in St. Louis. When World War I broke out, he gave up his post at the temple and enlisted in the army as a private and went over to France with the first 750 Americans. He was succes- sively promoted to sergeant, lieutenant-chaplain, captain and senior chaplain of the 77th di- vision. He held the French Croix de Guerre decoration and several American citations, in- cluding the Purple Heart. After the war, he was named overseas director of the Jewish Welfare Board and later served the JWB in World War II as chaplaincy commissioner. He went to Poland for the Jiiint Distribution Committee in- 1918. In 1934, after entering the busi- ness field, he was named super- intendent of the bureau of com- pensation of the Chicago Public Works Department. In 1936 he was named director of finance of the Union of American He brew Congregations and later was executive director of the Milwaukee Jewish Welfare Fed- eration.
