Brandeis President
Stresses Hebrew
Culture for U.S. Jews
By WALTER L. FIELD
Was Buddhism, Confucianism
and Janism inspired by Juda-
ism in the 6th century BCE as
Mohammedanism was in the 6th
century CE?
In the 6th century before the
Christian era-perhaps the out-
standing one for Jews and the
world-Judah was destroyed,
and after 50 years the exiled
Jews returned and rebuilt their
land.
In this century Greek philos-
ophy began to flourish and
three religious movements arose
in the Far Eost, India and Chi-
na.
Siddartha Gautama, the Bud-
dha - the Enlightened One-
(564-483 BCE) - after wander-
ing for many years said in the
city of Benares in Northern In-
dia that he had found the key
to wisdom in the Five Com-
mandments. These are- almost

1,700 Cuban Jews
Settled in New York
NEW YORK, (JTA) - Seven-
teen hundred Jewish refugees
from Cuba were among the 5,775
Jewish refugees resettled in New
York City during 1962 by the
New York Association for New
Americans, the annual meeting
of the agency's board was told
here. NYANA received its funds
from the United Jewish Appeal.
The report was made by J.
Clarence Davies, Jr., who was
elected to a third term as presi-
dent. The NYANA, organized in
1949, has resettled more than
90,000 Jewish refugees in the
New Yark metropolitan area.
John F. Thomas, director of
the Cuban Refugee Program of
the U.S. Department of Health.
Education and Welfare, lauded
the NYANA program. . Members
of the Jewish communities in the
United States know what it
means to be a refugee," he said.
"They know the meaning of help-
ing a refugee to adjust himself
to a new life, and they realize
the dignity which goes hand-in-
glove with becoming a self-sup-
porting member of a democratic
community."

steal, do not lie, do not commit
adultery, do not become intoxi-
cated.
This is now known as Bud-
dhism. Buddah also paraphrased
the dictum found in Leviticus
19:18: "Thou shalt love they
neighbor as thyself," to read:
"Hurt not others in ways that
you yourself would find hurt-
ful."
In India, Natapatta Vardhama
-known as the Mhariva-the
Great Hero - (556-484 BCE.)
like Buddha, enunciated five
commandments: Do not kill, do
not steal, do not lie, do not live
an unchaste life, do not covet
anything. Mahariva named his
religious pronouncements Jan-
ism.
In neighboring China, Chin-
kung-better known as Confuci-
us, the Philosopher-(551-479)
-was not a religious teacher
but he, too, paraphrased Leviti-
cus 19:18 to read: "do not unto
others what you would not have
them do unto you."
What a coincidence that all
three movements began in the
middle of the 6th century BCE,
30 years after the destruction
of the First Temple and the
exile of Judah to Babylon. We
know that Jeremiah the Proph-
et escaped to Egypt, that Jew-
ish groups went to Medina and
Yemen, that many Jews escaped
to Persia (Iran), Afghanistan,
Pakistan, India and China. Solo-
mon in the 10th century BCE
instituted commercial relations
with Ophir (India). While Ju-
dah was destroyed and Jews
could not return to a devastated
land, many must have settled
in a land they knew best and
had commercial dealings with-
India.
We must think of the Lost
Ten Tribes who were driven
north by their conquerors into
Persia and Afghanistan, • who
founded large communities in
Bukhara and Natima, and had_
connections with China and In-
dia.
It is known that the Bene Is-
rael in India do not celebrate
Hanukah because their ances-
tors left Judah before the sec-
ond century BCE when the Mac-
cabees were victorious.
My claim is that Buddhism,
Janism and Conficianism were
influenced by Judaism, just as
Mohammed was 12 centuries
later. The Jews themselves
never succeeded in proselytiz-
ing, but when they inspired a
prophet among the gentiles they
succeeded greatly. Even Saul
(Paul) of Tarsus could hardly
have succeeded among the pag-
ans had he not acted as one of
their kind and made it easier
for the pagans to accept the
"One God" idea.
