Eyes on Washington

The eyes of Israel—and of Britain, France and other countries
—are now focused on the United States . . The belief exists
there that President Kennedy strongly supports Nasser in his
ambition to gain complete domination in the Middle East . .
Britain is not happy about it, since this would mean that in the
long run Britain would lose its last positions in the area, including
Aden and the oil producing sheikdoms . . . France is not happy
about it, since the French cannot forget that it was Nasser who
for seven years supported the Algerian rebels against France,
and especially since Nasser is now seeking to attract Algeria into
becoming a member of the new federated United Arab Republic
-. • . Israel is naturally unhappy, because it has all the reasons to
fear a renewed Arab war against the Jewish State if Nasser be-
comes the top ruler in the Middle East . . . Why does the U.S.
Government regard the new pro-Nasser developments in the
Middle East with satisfaction? . . . Why is Washington giving
tremendous aid to Nasser, reaching $250,000,000 in 1962 alone?
. . Why is the U. S. helping Nasser indirectly to acquire more
and more arms from the Soviet Union and to maintain German
nuclear experts working in Cairo on missiles? . . . The answer is,
that high officials in Washington believe that a victorious Nasser
would be in a position to stabilize the situation in the Middle
East and eliminate Communist influence from that area . . . Also,

the American

MISS FRAN FRIED

Mr. and Mrs. Alex Fried of
Parklawn Ave., Oak Park, an-
nounce the engagement of their

daughter, Frances Rhoda, to
Sanford Gutman, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Burton H. Gutman of Wild-
wood Ave.,, Oak Park.
The bride-elect is a sophomore
at Wayne State University,
that a strong Nasser would be released of his frustration complexes where her fiance is a senior in
and show himself more elastic in his dealings with Israel . . . the College of Liberal Arts.

Israel does not share these views and regards Nasser as the arch-
enemy who may strike at the Jewish State if he feels the moment
is. opportune . . . Israelis also feel that Washington is not justi-
fied in attempting to prevent Israel from defense action in the
event of a Nasserite takeover of Jordan which would expose the
Israeli borders to greater danger . . . At the present moment the

King of Jordan is defying Nasser with all his might trying to

maintain his regime . . . But who can tell how long he will be
able to remain in power, if the United States will not come out
with a clear warning to Nasser against attempting to swallow
Jordan? .. Such a warning is not forthcoming, and Israel would
feel more secure if a warning of this kind were issued from
Washington.

Comparative Figures

Speaking of American aid to Nasser to the extent of $250,-
000,000 in 1962, it will be of interest to many to learn that Israel
received only $82,000.000 last year in American aid . . . For the
first time, Israel received no grants at all and no technical assist-
ance from the U. S. Government in 1962 . . . The aid given con-
sisted exclusively of surplus food and development loans—repay-
able; in Israeli currency—and a $10,800,000 loan from the Export-
Import Bank repayable in American dollars . . . During all the
years of its existence, Israel received from the United States in
all forms of aid a total of about $880,000,000 This means that
Nasser has in one year—in 1962—received about 30 percent of
what Israel has been given in the course of 14 years ... The aid
granted by the U. S. to Israel included about $209,000,000 in
loans from the Export-Import Bank, of which Israel paid off about
$133,000,000 in principal and interest up to 1962 . . . Israel has
never received any military grants from the United States, but
received some credits for the purchase of equipment, supplies and
spare parts . . American aid to Israel, which started in 1949,
when President Truman gave de jure recognition to Israel has
steadily declined since 1953 . . . In 1949 Israel received a $100,-
000,000 loan from the Export-Import. Bank . . . The last payment
on this loan is being made by Israel this year.
