NEWS -- Frid ay, May 10, 1963 JOHN LURIE They will gather at an Ambas- sador Ball sponsored by the De- troit Friends of Yeshiva Uni- versity under the chairmanship of Abraham Borman. Proceeds of the function, Borman said will be allocated for the main- tenance of the University's wide-spread academic, commu- nity service and research activ- ities including an annual $1,000,000 program of scholar- ship assistance to gifted stu- dents of limited financial means. The event, the sixth annual function to be tendered by De- troit Yeshiva Friends will pay tribute to 30 Detroit Ambassa- dors, members of the com- munity who =have enrolled in the program by contributing $1,000 or more to provide- schol- arship . for gifted I youngsters. John E. Lurie, co-chairman of the event, stated that "his- torically, for realistic and valid reasons, the Jewish people have been concerned with the acqui- sition of higher learning. Know- ledge was a commodity that a transient people could carry with them when forced to leave a hostile land. Often in the past, Jews would be stripped of material assets prior to be- ing exiled and it was their knowledge and training that en- abled them to survive in a new and alien country." "Today", Lurie said, "our Jewish citizens are still in- volved with higher learning but it is gratifying to note that it is not a matter of acquiring knowledge as a transient peo- ple but rather the desire to plant their roots deeply into the soil of our great nation. One of the finest expressions of a permanent culture is the existence • of a university. Throughout the world these noble academic structures re- flect the vision of the various great religions that created them." Organized as the first United States -yeshiva" (school of tra- ditional Jewish learning) in 1886, the university combines two time-honored systems of education—the liberal arts tra- dition extending back to the Middle Ages and the even earlier tradition of Jewish learning. Admission to the May 26 event, under the general chair- manship of David Goldberg, is by $50 subscription. Other local officers a r e Robert Brody and Edward C. Levy, co-chairmen, Benjamin Levinson, Marshall of Ambassa- dors; Nathan I. Goldin, secre- tary, and Daniel A. Laven, treasurer. Reservations may be secured through any of the officers or the university's regional office, 861-0805.
