'Between You
and Me'

...

Negative Elements:
The American Council for Judaism—which is holding its
annual conference this week-end—should change its name to
American Council Against Judaism, is the opinion of many Jews
who by no stretch of imagination could be classified as Zionists
against whom the Council is conducting its fight . . . It is based
on the fact that the Council's propaganda is entirely of a negative
character and is contrary to the spirit of Judaism . . . From
letters the Council is now sending to its members, one can see
that this organization seeks to claim credit for certain question-
able achievements in Washington . . . During the 20 years of its
existence, the Council for Judaism remained an insignificant
group trying to boast of its "influence but actually having no in-
fluence to speak of . . . Its major activity is to disseminate
"private statements" in Washington which may perhaps be read'
by some -minor officials .. . However, these "private statements"
—as the Council calls them in its fund-raising letters—are totally
ignored by higher Washington officials . . . Everybody of import-
ance in Washington knows that the American Jewish Committee
is not a Zionist group, and that, with regard to Israel it main-
tains sober views . .. Thus, the "private" anti-Israel statements
of the Council for Judaism are always checked in Washington
against the views of the American Jewish Committee . . . And
it is the views of the American Jewish Committee — and not
those of the Council for Judaism — that are usually taken into
consideration in Washington.

Editor's Note: The Detroit afternoon newspaper for the
first time in many, many years assigned a reporter to cover an
out-of-town convention of a Jewish nature. Not since the time
of Phil Adler's services has that newspaper assigned a reporter
to a national out-of-town Jewish convention. It selected the
anti-Zionist, anti-Israel — indeed, the pro-Arab — Council for
Judaism for coverage this week. By an amazing allotment of
extra time for the reporter, four days before the convention
was to open, in New York, the newspaper's representative swal-
lowed — hook, line and sinker — the handouts that give the
impression that there is an enthusiastic national endorsement
of the so-called American Council for Judaism. The. reporter
assigned to this task has been at Jewish gatherings here and
should have been better informed than to impugn the integ-
rity of the United Jewish Appeal or so to ignore the earnest-
ness of nationwide celebrations of Israel's 15th anniversary as
to write that "coincidental with the ACJ -conference are cele-
brations by other Jewish groups around the country of Israel's
15th anniversary of her independence." One would imagine,
judging by such a gross misrepresentation, that the sentiments
of 5,500,000 American Jews are matched by the antagonisms
and hatreds of a group of Council Jews that numbers less than
12,000. It would be interesting to know what prompted our
afternoon newspaper, which might consider it presumptuous for
anyone to suggest that it cover a national Zionist convention,
or a UJA national gathering, to select the Council for Judaism
for special attention. Didn't it realize that such a special priv-
ilege is tantamount to an insult to the entire Greater Detroit
Jewish community of 95,000 of whom not more than a dozen
can be counted in the ranks of the self-hating anti-Jewish
Council for Judaism?

Pertinent Question:
Is the State Department in Washington unwittingly prepar-
ing a new Castro by supporting Nasser? This is the question
raised in London where there is not much love for Nasser's
adventures and hiS ambition to dominate the entire Middle
East . . . British experts on the Middle East feel that Nasser may
become another Castro and they do not hesitate to warn the
United States to this effect . . . They point out that . Moscow anti-
cipates becoming in the long run the heir to power in the Middle
East through Nasser, even if he may not play the Soviet game
now . . . They disagree with Washington's view that Nasser is a
barrier against Communism . . . In their view, Washington will
have to be kept responsible for a major upheaval in the Middle
East, should the United States continue to back Nasser . . . This
upheaval, as seen in London, will cause the destruction of the
present regimes in Jordan and Saudi Arabia, the elimination
of the British from Adem, and will even affect the present
regimes in Iran and in Ethiopia . . . They warn the United States
to recognize these facts before it is too late, and to take a new
look at its present policy in the Middle East . . . They advise
the United States to back up the states friendly to the West
rather than to speculate on Nasser who is already starting new
talks with Khrushchev by sending his highest aides to Moscow.

Kennedy Declines to Send Greetings to Judaism Council

WASHINGTON, (ITA) —
President John F. Kennedy has
declined to send a customary
annual greeting to a conference
of the American Council for
Judaism to be held in New York
City on May 4 and 5. •
Council leaders had sought
to solicit a message of greeting
from President Kennedy prior
to their anti-Zionist meeting in

an attempt to add stature to
the occasion. But White House
officials were aware of ex-
tremist activities of the council,
viewed as harmful to Israel-
American relations, and also
noted recent charges by the
Jewish War Veterans of the
U.S.A. that the anti-Zionist,
group sought to "whitewash"
Soviet anti-Semitism. The White

JWV Assails Council For
Judaism Stand On USSR
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — At-
tempts by the American Council
for Judaism to "whitewash" So-
viet anti - Semitism were de-
nounced by National Comman-
der Morton London of the Jew-
ish War Veterans.
London said the quotations
by the Soviet Embassy and
Communist periodicals of
"whitewash" material issued by
the American Council for Juda-
ism to minimize and obscure
the actual plight of Russian
Jews "can no longer be ignor-
ed." The Veterans commander
said: "It is particularly ironic
that an organization which has
the word 'Judaism' in its title
can function so cynically as a
cover . for . Russian . anti-Semi-
tism."
