Silyer-Draichorn
Vows Solemnized

"LETTER BOX"

reading his book, one is left
with the inescapable fact that
the six million Jews (may they
rest in p e a c e) were killed
through the instigation, leader-
ship and implementation of the
German bureaucracy. With the
same perpetrators present today
in this selfsame bureaucracy
there is no doubt that the "new
Germany" • of today is just an-
other German euphemism de-
signed to hide the truth from
the world.

Editor, The Jewish News
Throughout the years it has
been my very sad duty to bid
farewell to a deceased veteran,
at either of the chapels, only
when the family requested such
services. It didn't make any dif-
ference whether the veteran was
a member of American Legion
or not, as long as he was of the
Jewish faith.
The services which are con-
ducted at the chapels are very
patriotic and brief. The casket
is draped with the. American flag
and the members march past
and give the salute, then take
their seats in the rear of the
chapel. I am always last in line,
saluting, then I go to the front
and express condolences on be-
half of the Rosenwald Post to
the family and thiS takes not
more than two minutes. We do
not offer any prayers. We feel
that this is the duty of,the rabbi.
In the past . . . some of the
rabbis hesitated somewhat, then
agreed and sat down in front of
the chapel. Other rabbis immedi-
ately agreed that I do pay the
tribute. On other occasions the
rabbi felt that he was capable of
mentioning the fact that the man
was a veteran . . . This is what
we might call a mixed feeling
among the rabbis, be they Re-
form, Conservative or Orthodox.
Just recently a veteran passed
away, whose relatives are mem-
bers of the Rosenwald and Aux-
iliary . . . They wanted a vet-
erans service. Everything was
arranged . . . I approached the
rabbi who was to conduct the
religious services, as I always
do, to request two minutes to
pay the tribute. I was refused.
He stated that he does not want
any organizations making re-
marks . . . Finally the rabbi
gave in with this remark . . .
"I'll go in the back room and
when Mr. Shapiro is finished
please call me out . . ."
. . I feel that no rabbi has
the right to refuse any represen-
tative of any organization in pay-
ing tribute to a departed mem-
ber. When a man has served his
country and he has received
"the last call," we 'feel that as
veterans we have the right to
bid him farewell and pay him
the last tribute . . . when re-
quested by his family.

Point to Absence
of Reference to Killing
in Nazi Correspondence

Editor, The Jewish News:
In "P u r el y Commentary"
dated April 12, there are aspects
of Dr. Hilberg's book which you
seem to have overlooked.
In discussing the Jewish vic-
tims Dr. Hilberg, on page 667,
poses a pointed question; ". . .
were these people really fooled?
Or did they deliberately fool
themselves?" Throughout his
book Dr. Hilberg points to the
significant absence of direct ref-
erences to death and the killing
centers in German correspond-
ence. This same phenomenen is
discussed, on page 668, in ref-
erence to Jewish correspondence
and terminology:
". . . a crematory was called
a takery'— a man .. . destined
for the gas chamber—was called
a `Moslem'; and the depot hold-
ing the belongings must be em-
phasized, are not Nazi terms;
they are expressions by the vic-
tims. They are the counterparts
of the Nazi vocabulary, and, like
the German euphemisms, they
were designed to blot out vi-
sions of death."
Dr. Hilberg's objective was to
discuss "the storm that caused
the wreckage." It is here that
Dr. Hilberg is at his best. After
