World Jewry, Israel,
of
Nations :Mourn Ben-Zvi's Death

JTA Teletype Wires to The Jewish News
JERUSALEM—The people of Israel went into mourning

Tuesday
for their beloved President Itzhak Ben-Zvi, who lost his fight against
the ravages of cancer and died early
Tuesday morning. He was 78.
A deep gloom enveloped the nation
when the death was announced. Light
radio programs were cancelled and rendi-
tions of the Psalms and liturgy were sub-
stituted. Members of the Cabinet, diplo-
mats and senior government officials be-
gan calling at the President's residence
to pay their respects.
From all parts of the globe, from non-
Jews as well as Jews, from heads of gov-
ernments, from religious movements and
from scholars everywhere, there com-
menced a flow of messages of condolences
Ben-Zvi family and to the people
of Israel. Tributes arrived from the Presi-
dent of the United States, from heads of
many other governments, from people in
Itzhak Ben-Zvi
high places and from those who had labored with the second President
of Israel in the ranks of labor, in schools of learning, in behalf of
Israel's redemption and upbuilding.
A state funeral was held Wednesday. All entertainment and
recreational features of the 15th Independence Day celebrations were
canceled. The military parade and naval display in Haifa on Monday
will take place without the usual participation of military bands. Chief

of Staff Tzvi Tsur issued an order of the day for a week of mourning
at all garrisons and camps, where flags were lowered to half mast
position. Israel's Parliament suspended its current recess for a special
meeting of mourning.
The Presidential residence was opened to the public and a
somber people lined up to wait in turn to file past the bier draped in
the national colors and the President's personal prayer shawl. A Minyan
of army chaplains began recitation of Psalms. Among those who filed
by the bier in the morning were Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Nissim, Supreme
Court Justices, members of the Jewish Agency Executive and others.
The death of Israel's second President occurred at 7:05 a.m.
Tuesday, Israel time. Mr. Ben-Zvi had - been in a coma and began to
sink rapidly during the night. Mrs. Ben-Zvi and members of the family
Were at the bedside.
)(bout 9 p.m. Monday night he awoke and repeated the entire
La. The attending physician then heard the President call feebly
r his brother Aaron. He notified the brother as well as Prime Minister
Ben-Gurion. However, the rapidly dying President failed to recognize
'either man when he entered his room. Earlier Monday afternoon •the
President awakened briefly from his deep sleep partly induced by
sedation to relieve his pain and asked Mrs. Ben-Zvi, who had been
constantly at his bedside, to read to him from the weekly portion of
the Bible.
The President's last official message was issued in connection with
Israel's 15th Anniversary. The President asked for divine blessing
on the defence forces of Israel; on its pioneers and builders and all
who sought to advance the education of the people.
He asked that the people recall "all who gave their lives on the

Detroit Jewry Acclaims Israel's
15th Anniversary Sunday Evening

Detroit's traditional tribute to Israel, marking the Jewish State's 15th anniversary, will
take place Sunday evening, at Mumford High School.
With Col. Jacob Mombaz, Counselor to the Israel Mission to the United Nations, and
Rabbi Max J. Wohlgelernter (Ittamar), general secretary of the Israel Chief Rabbinate,
former Detroiter who now makes his home in Jerusalem, as guest speakers, the event is
co-sponsored by the Zionist Council and the Jewish Community Council.
The occasion will be utilized to pay tribute to the memory of the departed President of
Israel, Itzhak Ben-Zvi.
The entire community is invited to participate in the anniversary celebration.

On Israel's 15th anniversary, the great
'homecoming continues, more than a million
Jews having reached the shores of the Holy
Land since 1948. Immigration again is at a
Thigh level this year, with the aid of the United
Jewish Appeal, the major beneficiary of the
Detroit Allied Jewish Campaign.

This historic photograph shows the raising of Israel's flag at the Unitect - Nations, when Israel
was admitted to the world organization in 1949. Abba Eban, then Israel's Ambassador to the
United States (left), and Moshe Sharett, Israel's first Foreign Minister (right), were their coun-
try's chief participants in the ceremony.
