Ben-Gurion, Ben-Zvi Issue Call
for Preparedness on Anniversary

JERUSALEM, (JTA) —Israel
Prime Minister David Ben-Gur-
ion issued through the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency the follow-
ing 'Independence Day' mes-
sage:
"As we prepare to celebrate
the 15th anniversary of the re-
establishment of Israel's inde-
pendence in the ancient home-
land, we look back upon a
decade and a half of many gra-
tifying achievements and look
forward to a period of new op-
portunities but mom en tou s
challenges and grave perils.
"Hundreds of thousands of
Jews wish to join their people
in Israel, but are not permitted

WJC Suggestions on
German Scientists in Egypt
PARIS (JTA) —World Jewry
"is deeply shocked" by the pres-
ence of West German scientists
in Egypt, working on non-con-
ventional weapons "aimed at
Israel's ultimate destruction," an
official of the French Section of
the World Jewish Congress told
Karl Knoke, the West German
Minister in Paris.
Armand Kaplan, secretary
general of the French Section,
met with the West German dip-
lomat to convey the "apprehen-
sions" of the World Jewish Con-
gress to the West German Gov-
ernment. The WJC official asked
the diplomat to convey to the
West German Government a -se-
ries of proposals to deal with
the problem.
One of the proposals was to
stigmatize publicly all West Ger-
mans "who aid in production of
arms aimed at Israel's destruc-
tion." Another was to recall all
West German nationals engaged
in such actions. Others were to
take • "appropriate legal meas-
ures" against nationals rejecting
appeals to return home and to
prevent all firms with which the
nationals were in contact to get
any assistance from the Govern-
ment.

Canada Investigates
Anti-Semitic Mail

TORONTO, (JTA) — Anti-
Semitic pamphlets and leaflets
have been offered by mail to
Canadians as "free sample col-
lectors' items" furnishing "an
interesting and unusual hobby,"
the Royal Canadian Mounted
Police reported. The police said
they were investigating the mat-
ter.
One of the leaflets promised
to execute all Jews who have
taken part in "Marxist or union
plots." Another alleged that the
late Adolf Eichmann had been
"tortured" into confessing the
murder of millions of Jews.

to leave the countries where
they live; one day . . . we are
confident . . . the gates of de-
parture will be opened, and
we must be ready to welcome
them home.
"On all our borders, except
the Mediterranean shore, we
are surrounded by hostile
States, which make no secret
of their determination to
make one more attempt to
destroy us as soon as they
feel strong enough to try.
Our neighbors receive plenti-
ful supplies of the most mod-
ern land, sea and air weapons
at little or not cost, and we
have to strain our resources
to keep pace.
"Only if our spirit and our
defenses are strong will our
enemies recoil from the hazards
involved in attacking us; only
our continued internal strength
can guarantee continued peace.
"We must devote an increas-
ing share of our resources to
closing the educational and
cultural gap between veterans
and newcomers from poor, un-
educated, oppressed countries.
"Although we now grow
three-quarters of our own
food, manufacture many pro-
ducts that were previously
imported, and export 10 times
as much as in 1949, there
is still a large adverse trade
balance, and we must work
hard and well to achieve
economic independence.
"With confidence in the en-
ergies of our people and the
continued devotion and support
of Jews everywhere, we go
forward to meet the challenges
of the next decade, so that
when we come to celebrate our
semi-jubilee we may see Israel
strong, free, prosperous and at
peace, a source of pride to all
Jewry and a light unto the na-
tions."
President Itzhak Ben-Ziv's
message also sounded a call for
military preparedness for peace
and economic preparedness for
aliyah and the growth of the
nation. He stated, in part:
so long as our neigh-
bors threaten, night and day,
that they mean to destroy us,
it is our duty to increase our
military preparedness and ap-
ply ourselves to the unceasing
development of the defensive
strength of our army, in which
our trust is placed . . . And may
blessings descend upon men of
research and of science, help-
ing with mind and hand to up-
lift the prestige of Israel, to
gather in brothers from dis-
persion and mould them into a
single nation, free and creative
on the ancestral soil."

Seven Scranton Finks Studying at Yeshiva U.

Scranton, Pa., the home of
mining and governors, adds a
new dimension to its list of
titles—"Hometown of the Fink
Family."
It all started in 1892 when
Marcus Fink, later to be joined
by his brother Eliyahu, arrived
in the new world seeking reli-
gious freedom. He found this
rare commodity in Scranton,
and economic opportunities as
well in the feed and grain busi-
ness. Today, the descendants of
the original Fink family num-
ber 10 children, 23 grandchil-
dren and 21 great-grandchil-
dren.
A basic doctrine of the Fink
family has been love of learn-
ing. This has brought seven
Scrantonian Fink's to New York
City's Yeshiva University, with
three more scheduled to make
the trip in September.
At Yeshiva University's Stern
College for Women there are:
Hindy Fink, 20, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Meyer Fink of
915 Olive Street, Scranton, class
of 1963.

Shirley Fink, 19, R.F.D. #3,
Lake Ariel, Pa., daughter of
David and Tobi Fink, graduated
the Scranton Hebrew Day School
and Yeshiva University High
School for Girls in Brooklyn, is
a sophomore majoring in mathe-
matics.
Judy, 21, and Freyda, 18,
Fink are the daughters of Mr.
and Mrs. Alex Fink of 825 Olive
Street, Scranton. Freyda is a
sophomore and Judy a senior
and both are majoring in educa-
tion.
Although the distaff side
dominates the family at the uni-

versity, the males are also rep-
resented.
Sheldon Fink, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Meyer E. Fink of 615 Mon-
roe Avenue, Scranton, a student
at Yeshiva College, is a history
major.
Sheldon's brother Joel is a
sophomore at Yeshiva Univer-
sity's High School for Boys in
Manhattan.
