LONDON (JTA)—Ten Soviet
Ukrainians charged with hav-
ing aided the Nazi regime dur-
ing World War II by killing
15,000 persons in the gas cham-
bers of Sobibur, near Maidanek,
in Poland, have been executed
after a trial in Kiev, according
to . a dispatch from the Soviet
Union received here.
The principal witness against
the men was a Soviet army offi-
cer named Pechersky, a name
common among Jews in Russia.
Otherwise, however, the dis-
patch did not identify the vic-
tims as Jews—a fact well known
here as well as in the USSR.

Brochure Reveals
Treblinka Mania

Releasing an illustrated bro-
chure "Treblinka-the Nazi Death
Camp," the Polish Embassy in
Washington has issued the fol-
lowing accompanying statement:
"While recalling the Twen-
tieth Anniversary of the Warsaw
Ghetto fighters, tribute must be
paid to the victims of the exter-
mination camp in Treblinka. This
`Big Factory of Death,' as it is
often called, set up by the Nazis
in 1942, was the graveyard for
750,000 Jews, among them the
Warsaw Ghetto insurgents and
hundreds of thousands of victims
of Polish, Czechoslovakian, Aus-
trian, Belgian, French, Greek,
Bulgarian, Yugoslavian, German,
and Soviet population.
"There were 10 gas chambers,
operating day and night, into
which were crammed the victims
of the Nazi insane doctrine of
free space 'for the Ubermensch.'
"The Polish nation, Jewish
people all over the world pay
tribute to the inocent victims of
the Nazi genocide. Now, in the
place where the mass crime had
been committed, a monument is
being erected, with the help of
public collections, to honor the
martyrs.
"The memorial in Treblinka
and the huge stone slabs scatter-
ed aroung, making up a symbolic
cemetery, will recall to the opin-
ion of the world the monstrous
annihilation of the Jewish peo-
ple, the infamous act of man
against man.
" 'We want to enshrine these
buried memories,'—to quote Pro-
fessor Kotarbinski—'in redemp-
tion of the yearnings of those
who died in despair with only
an imperishable hope that they
would be remembered' ."

East Berlin Opens
Exhibit of Warsaw
Ghetto Revolt Items

LONDON, (JTA)—An exhibi-
tion of documents, photographs
and relics of the Warsaw Ghetto
opened in East Berlin and will
be on view at the Polish Center
there until the end of this
month.
Sponsors of the exhibit includ-
ed the Jewish community of
East Berlin. Chief Rabbi Riesen-
burger attended the opening
ceremony. Others who were
present included Dr. Witkowski,
the Vice-Premier of the East
German Republic, Dr. Wendel;
the Foreigh Minister; and lead-
ers of the East German Commu-
nist Party.
The 20th anniversary of the
Warsaw Ghetto Revolt also was
commemorated at a mass meet-
ing in Prague. Dr. A. Ehrmann,
chairman of the Jewish commu-
nity of Prague, was one of the
speakers.

Abramowitz Dies Dies at the Age of 84 BASLE—Formal

NEW YORK (JTA)—Raphael
Abramowitz, world leader of
the Social Democratic ,move-
nient and bitter opponent of the
Communist regime in the Soviet
Union, died here April 11 at
the age of 82. He was a mem-
ber of the editorial staff of the
Jewish Daily Forward and edi-
tor of the Algemeine Encyclo-
pedia in Yiddish since 1940,
when he settled in the United
States.
Born in Dvinsk, Latvia, he
joined the Jewish socialist
"Bund" movement in 1900. He
was arrested by the Czarist au-
thorities and bAnished to Si-
beria from where he escaped.
He lived abroad for several
years and returned to Russia
after the Revolution of 1917
where he played an important
role in the Menshevik move-
ment which opposed the Bolshe-
viks. He was arrested in '1918
by the Cheka, the Communist
Secret Service, and held im-
prisoned for several months.
In 1920; he was permitted to
leave the Soviet Union, and
settled in Berlin. Shortly before
the Nazis came to power, in
1933, he moved to Paris and
started editing the Algemeine
Encyclopedia in Yiddish which
was later transferred to New
York. While editing the encyclo-
pedia and writing for the For-
ward, he also published a num-
ber of works on. Jews, including
a book- on the Jews in Eastern
Europe annihilated by the Nazis.

Rabbi Zepin served as secre-
tary of the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations, the con-
gregational body of Reform
Judaism, from 1910 until 1941.
He helped establish a num-
ber of affiliates, including the
National Federation of Temple
Brotherhoods, the National Fed-
eration of Temple Sisterhoods,
the National Federation of Tem-
ple Youth and others. He also
served as secretary of the Joint
Committee on Rabbinical Pen-
sions.
