The Commission is composed of 14 rabbis representing the Chicago Orthodox Rabbinate and the Chicago Rabbinical Council. It has issued a state- ment expressing "great disap- pointment" with the stand tak- en by the Butchers Association. The latter have made a series of demands which the Commis- sion said it finds "unaccept- able." Those demands were reported to include a request that the as- sociation be included as an equal member of the Commis- sion; that all kashruth stan- dards and regulations must first be formally accepted by the as- sociation, and not directly by individual butchers to be certi- fied by the Commission; and an assertion that the association forbids individual members to negotiate directly with the Com- mission. According to the Commission: the conditions are "obviously unacceptable." The UKC must not become involved in the business itnerests of the associa- tion," the public announcement stated. "Furthermore," it went on, "it cannot permit the busi- ness association to force itself upon the direction of the UKC which is concerned only with matters of Halacha, which is the province of the rabbinate. Kash- ruth supervision must be sepa- rate and distinct from any busi- ness involvement." WRITERS QUICK SERVICE on "The Real Worth of A Man" and "When It Is Too Late." Israel Chief Rabbi Calls for Courage MANUFACTURED BY Kashruth Commission, Butchers Association Clash in Chicago Over Standards JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Nissim called on the Israeli populace to draw courage and inspiration from the glorious past to face current threats from the country's enem- ies. In a Passover message broad- cast over the nation's radio network, the Chief Rabbi said that Israel as a people is small and poor, its resources limited and its needs great, and sur- rounded by a wall of enmity and must constantly be poised. Yet, he noted, Israel main- tains its defenses and existance, builds up the country and gath- ers in the dispersed who are settled on the land. These, he said, are miracles which cannot be fathomed except by the su- perior power of faith.
