Stone, Many Canadians Tell Census They Are Jews by Religion, Not Race MONTREAL, (JTA) - The Canadian Jewish Congress re- ported that it has authorized a study to determine why a large number of Canadian Jews reg- ularly report to census takers that their religion is Jewish but not their ethnic origin as Jews. The Can a d i an government census each 10 years asks every resident of Canada both his re- ligion and his ethnic group. The Congress pointed out that by definition of the census, Jews are an e t h n i c group, which is described as distinct from citizenship or land of birth. Most persons who are Jews by religion, the organiza- tion added, are descended from Jewish parents, except for those who are converts to Judaism. The Congress said that the census reports s h o wed that "tens of thousands of Canadian -Jews who gave their religion as Jewish to the census enum- erators, and therefore made no effort to hide their Jewish affiliation, gave some other answer to the question on their ethnic origin." The Canadian Jewish Con- gress Committee on Research discussed the issue and author- ized the start of an investiga- tion. The committee asked the Dominion Bureau of Statistics to supply a cross-classification of age, education and country of origin of all Canadians who gave their religion as Jewish but some other ethnic origin. The award, consisting of a silver medal and a monetary prize of 400 Guineas ($1,176) is presented annually to a chemist of British nationality under 36 years of age for the "most meritorious contribution to experimental chemistry" during the preceding five years. Sondheimer spent two years as rese'arch fellow of Harvard, and then served as associate director of chemical research of Syntex, Mexico City, before joining the Weizmann Institute in 1956. Sondheimer will acept the Medal and prize at the 19th International Congress of Pure and Applied Chemistry in London in July. built-in electric apppliances in- cluding an automatic dishwash- er. Soviet Withdraws Witnesses from Trial of Ex-Nazis COBLENZ, (JTA)-The four Soviet citizens who were to tes- tify in the mass murder trial of George Heuser and 11 other former SS men, charged with killing 35,000 Jews in Minsk during the Nazi occupation of Soviet territory, have decided not to come to Coblenz to tes- tify, according to information reaching the Soviet Embassy in Bonn. The reason given was that their scheduled testimony had become "senseless" after the stay in West Germany of an- other Soviet witness had been cut "radically" by the West German passport office. Accord- ing to the report, the four Soviet witnesses felt that Nikolai Alexeyev, a Leningrad law pro- fessor, had been deprived of the opportunity to complete his tes- timony by the reduction of his permitted stay in West Ger- many. It was reported mean- while that the court was anxious to end the trial of the 12 former Nazis. The period for evidence will be closed by either April 10 or April 17. The trial started six months ago.
