DETROIT JEWISH NEWS -- Friday, April 5, 1963 THE MEN, THE PEOPLE, THE GUNS OF WARSAW GHETTO REVOLT On April 21, a World Jewish Congress delegation will arrive in Warsaw to participate in ceremonies on the 20th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Upris- ing. The WJC leaders will visit the site of the bitter struggle that was led by Mordechai Anielewicz (top, left), who rallied Ghetto Jews (below, right) to withstand the Nazi might. Equipped with a handful of obsolete arms (left), the Ghetto martyrs fought a gallant but losing battle that left the Ghetto a blazing ruins, as the other pictures show. Horrifying in their reminders of the great tragedy that was imposed upon Polish Jewry by the Nazis, an album of 541 photo- graphs, exposing the crimes that were committed from 1939 to 1945, has been issued under the title "Meczenstwo, Walka, Zag- lada Zydow w Polsce"—"Agony, Struggle and Destruction of Po- lish Jewry." An English translation of the text has been issued by the Polonia Publishing House with the permission of the publishing house of the Polish Ministry of National Defense. Accompanying the large album and the pamphlet with the trans- lation is another pamphlet pub- lished in Poznan, "Operation Reinhard — Mass Extermination of the Jewish Population in Po- land" — the title being based on the name of the head of the Chief Office for the Security of the Reich (RSHA), Reinhard Heydrich, who was killed by Czech patriots in 1942. Dr. Bernard Mark, director of the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw, Adam Rutkowski and Prof. Tadeusz Kotarhinski are the coauthors of articles accom- panying the album. In a prefatory note, Prof. Kotarbinski states: "This is a mournful record. One stands over this array of memories as over a tomb, and by the graveside the only posture which becomes the eternal re- pose of the Dead, is an abso- lute silence . . . We cannot allow what is past to be for- gotten. We want to enshrine these buried memories in re- demption of the yearnings of those who died in despair with only an imperishable hope that they would be remembered ... May man always behave to man in a way deserving of the respect of the respect-worthy." I The album and the pamphlets offer data relating to the mass murders, the ghetto conditions, the arm bands and the badges that were forced upon the im- prisoned. The photographs show in all their horrors the plunders, the forced labor, the deportations to the death camps, the extermina- tions, the profanation of religion. There are hundreds of I photographs showing the con- ! ditions in the Warsaw Ghetto, the battle scars, the weapons that were used, the heroes and the heroines, the documents relating to that period, the underground newspapers, the Nazi commanders who conduct- ed the wholesale massacres of Jews and others in Poland. In the translated brochure, in the section dealing with the ghetto heroism, is incorporated in the song of the Jewish fight- ers and partisans: Never say that there is only death for you. Though leaden skies may be concealing days of blue, Because the hour we have hungered for is near; Beneath our tread the earth shall tremble, we are here! This song was written with our blood and not with lead; It's not a song that summer birds sing overhead, It was a people among toppling barricades, That sang this song of ours with pistols and grenades. Written by Hirsh Glik, the song appears in a translation from the Yiddish. Jewish Students Ask UN to Intervene for Jews Jailed in Russia NOTICE OF PUBLICATION MEETING OF THE MEMBERSHIP (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) GENEVA—The World Asso- ciation of Jewish Students ap- pealed to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights here Tuesday to intervene for release of the Jews arrested last week in the Soviet Union for baking matzohs for Passover. The student group made the appeal in a cable to the com- mission which is currently in session here. The students also protested against the ban on Matzoh-baking in Russia. A similar protest was sent to the commission by P. Philipson, president of the Jewish Com- munity of Brussels. The Polish-published volumes add to the record indicting the Germans for t h e i r cruelties. They are timely accounts of the Warsaw Ghetto battle and serve at this time, on the 20th anni- versary of the ghetto revolt, to keep alive the memory of the heroes and to remind all about the horrors imposed upon man- kind by a brutal people. 741•1111111 ■ 11=6Iiiiirai MORTGAGES APPLICATIONS FOR VA or FHA ARE NOW BEING TAKEN On New or Existing Homes QUICK SERVICE Phone Us Today FRANKLIN MORTGAGE CORP.
