Negro Community-at-Large Not Anti-Semitic, NAACP Official Says

DR. EMANUEL NEUMANN

Dr. Neumann Is •
Jewish Agency's
Alternate Head

The anti-Semitism espoused
by the Black Muslims against
the Jews is not prevalent
amongst the large part of the
American Negro community.
This observation was made by
Roy Wilkins, executive secre-
tary to the National Association
for the Advancement of Color-
ed People, in an article in the
current issue of American Juda-
ism, official publication of the
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations.
Wilkins felt that misunder-
standing and lack of adequate
dialogue, rather than organized
anti-Semitism, exists today be-
tween Jew and Negro in this
country.
"Both Negroes and Jews
could improve their under-
standing of each other by em-
ploying more than a casual
or surface approach," he said.
"The responsible elements in
the Negro community which
have to develop maturity in
order to cope with their prob-
lems have no truck with anti-
semitism," Wilkins observed,
stating that Negroes "are too
occupied with fending off sense-
less hatred to become purvey-
ors of it."
Referring to recent anti-
Semitic outbursts by the Black
Muslims and their leaders, Wil-
kins said, "If the Black Mus-
lims appear to be anti-Semites

The King added that Morocco
was a member of the Afro-Asian
bloc in the United Nations and
that its position was clear also
as a member of the A r a b
League, in which Morocco was
at one with its Arab brothers.
He emphasized, however, that
there was no contradiction be-
tween Morocco's attitude toward
Iirael and its policy toward the
Jewish community.
Asked about the recent death
sentences passed on a number
of members of the Bahai faith,
the King said he would grant
them a pardon, if asked. He
pointed out that the death sen-
tences were imposed by the Mo-
roccan courts, not by the Moroc-
can government. He said this
indicated the separation of pow-
ers between the executive and
judicial branches of the Moroc-
can government.
He stressed, however, that he
agreed with the verdict, which,
he said, was based on the re-
quirement that the government
must defend itself against at-
tacks from within on the public
order.
RABAT (JTA) — A second
Jew was appointed to a high
Moroccan government post. He
is Henri Chana, whose appoint-
ment as director of cabinet for
the Finance Minister came one
month after Aime Bothol, an-
other Moroccan Jew, was named
cabinet director to the Minister
of Public Works.
Chana served previously as
cabinet director of the Ministry
of Commerce. Moroccan Jewish
leaders expressed "great satis-
faction" over the two appoint-
ments.
