Jesus Influenced by Pharisaism, R abbi Umen Says

Rabbi Samuel Umen, who now
occupies a pulpit in Manchester,
N. H., and formerly served the
Reform Congregation in Muske-
gon, Mich., has devoted much
study and research to the sub-
ject of Pharisaism, and his book,
"Pharisaism and Jesus," pub-
lished by Philosophical Library
(15 E. 40th, NY16), is a result
that has bruoght acclaim from
Christians as well as Jews.
In the main, Rabbi Umen's
book is devoted to analyses of
the Pharisees, their manner of
interpreting Jewish laws and ad-
hering to them.

Rabbi Umen also compares the
Sadducees to the Pharisees. He
points out that "the matter of
tradition was the great bone of
contention between the Phari-
sees and the Sadducees, from the
Pharisaic point of view, Torah
and Tradition were one and the
same . . . The Sadducees, on the
other hand, separated Tradition
or the Oral Law from the Writ-
ten. While the Sadducees saw
some need for tradition, they
refused, however, to accept the
notion that it was equal to the
Written Law . . ."
After reviewing the signifi-
cance in Jewish legal develop-
ments and in traditional histori-
cal evaluations of the major Jew-
ish writings, including all the
books in the Wisdom Literature,
Rabbi Umen speaks of the Jew-
ishness of Jesus, his adherence
to the Law, and he asserts that
he had come in the spirit of
Judaism: "For this was done by
the Pharisees right along through

Pharaoh, Pharaoh, let my people go!
My fettered children toil with ach-
ing limbs
And wearied fingers, brain and spirit
bound,
Their puny forms are bent; the
shadow dims
Their straining eyes; their ears are
choked with sound,
And thick with reek in every breath
they draw.
I gave them light to see and song to
hear.
I gave them Truth for guide and
Love for law;
And thou hast given darkness, blight
and fear.

In 1914 the American Jewish
Joint Distribution Committee,

ing in Europe, which became
World War I. It is a beneficiary

tion's annual Allied Jewish
Campaign.

Pharaoh, Pharaoh, let my children
go!
Thy heart is hard. Be warned. The
plague may come.
The wrong thou dost may breed yet
fouler wrong.
Those lips may speak in flame that
now are dumb;
Those feeble hands, through wrath
and hatred strong,
May rend where they have wrought.
Yes, once again
Disease. Revolt and Crime may
overthrow
The Selfishness that bred them.
Sons of men,
For dread of vengeance, let my
people go!

A Voice Unto Pharaoh

Pharaoh, Pharaoh, let my people go!
In chains unseen but strong, my
children slave,
Too dull for hopes or dreams, too
dumb for prayers.
Thou hast robbed them of the youth
I gave,
The world I made, the joys that
should be theirs,
Their lives are coined to swell the
shining store;
Then darest thou plead, "Nay Lord,
"I did not know,"
Still heaping up their burdens more
and more?
The sand is running; let my chil-
dren go.

their methods of interpreting
the Torah. The fact is that Jesus
did not revolutionize Judaism,
that he did not bring to it any-
thing startling, a teaching which
it did not already contain."
Rabbi Umen emphasizes that
"the spirit of Jesus is Pharisaic,"
that his attitude toward the
Torah "was similar to that of
the Rabbis." He states that "he
was completely in line with the
Rabbinic method of teaching and
the spirit of Pharisaism," that
"Jesus' approach to the law was
Pharisasic."
These conclusions, merged in
a scholarly analysis of the laws
and traditions of the Rabbis of
old, gives Rabbi Umen's book
special status.
